Tim Curry is a genius
I had read the book as a child, and Jules Verne is a master of course. But what makes this an absolute delight is the mischievous, sarcastic, subtle irony that Tim Curry's performance gives. An absolute delight!

great performance, classic story.
Tim Curry created a very good performance of this story.
As the title of the book suggests this story is about the joruney and holds little in comparison with the Brendan Fraiser film.

Tim works wonders with unpromising material.
Fair to say this novel has not weathered well. It's unlikely that Jules Verne had even a sketchy understanding of the science of his day. His premise is therefore ludicrous, put that aside many a novel has overcome similar difficulties. Where I got completely lost was with the characters. Axel the narrator is a complete basket case, his dubious opinions are eclipsed by his frequent manic-depressive episodes peppered with hallucinations and occasional swooning. His uncle is a little more physically robust, but is similarly inconsistent, emotionally incontinent one minute, repressed the next.
I cannot praise Tim Curry enough, he used his incredible vocal talents to rescue this drivel and deliver a masterclass in voice acting.

Very fun story, but beware if you speak Danish!
The story is super engaging and fun, and the narration is great...with the exception that, although there are Danish names and dialogue throughout the novel, apparently no one bothered to tell the narrator how to pronounce them! I'm just learning the language as a foreigner, and it even grated on my ears. The accents of those characters were really hokey as well. It didn't ruin the listen for me, but it was pretty annoying the whole way through. So if that will bother you, keep looking for a different version!

I thought it was about time I listened to a Jules Verne book. I am so glad I did.

Entertaining, if not thrilling
Jules Verne's novel is proto-science fiction with an emphasis on the science. There are fewer thrills and spills than would be expected of a more recent offering of this sort, but there is still plenty to keep the listener interested (if not on the edge of his seat). Tim Curry's reading is effective when it comes to characterisation (there are very few characters), but he is frequently tripped up by long Scandinavian or outlandish words, resulting in perceptible pauses in his delivery. Overall, this title is worth listening to, but don't expect the excitement of similar tales of fantastic exploration by authors such as Conan Doyle or HP Lovecraft.

Very good.
I originally read this as a child and I was not disappointed the second time around. The narration on this was excellent and really brought the story to life, with a less accomplished narrator there is a possibility that it could have been a bit “dry” but that was certainly not the case.
