Summary

Il più celebre romanzo di Pirandello, scritto nel 1904, narra la storia del bibliotecario Mattia Pascal, il quale, da ricco proprietario terriero, dopo una vita di sprechi e scioperataggine, si ritrova ridotto in miseria, a causa delle ruberie perpetrate dall'amministratore dei suoi terreni.Un vortice di disgraziate vicissitudini travolge la sua vita, quando infine, alla morte delle due figliolette, in preda alla disperazione, fugge da Miragno e, per puro caso si ritrova nel Casino di Montecarlo, dove vince una considerevole somma alla roulette. Durante il viaggio di ritorno legge sul giornale la notizia del proprio suicidio. Decide di approfittare dello scambio di persona per liberarsi di quella esistenza opprimente, e sotto il nome di Adriano Meis inizia una vita libera ed errabonda. Ma ben presto si rende conto di come senza uno stato civile, senza una vera identità, l'esistenza risulti vuota e misera, la finzione diventi insostenibile, senza neanche il diritto di potersi innamorare. Decide quindi inscenare il suicidio della sua seconda finta identità, e torna al paesello. Ma trovando la moglie risposata con il suo migliore amico, si renderà conto di non poter vivere più nemmeno la vita di prima, e si adatterà a stare nell'ombra, ormai per sempre: "il fu Mattia Pascal".
