Summary

Meeting by chance at a gambling hall in Europe, the separate lives of Daniel Deronda and Gwendolen Harleth are immediately intertwined. Daniel, an Englishman of uncertain parentage, becomes Gwendolyn's redeemer as she finds herself drawn to his spiritual and altruistic nature after a loveless marriage. But Daniel's path was already set when he rescued a young Jewess from suicide.

Daniel Deronda, George Eliot's final novel, is a remarkable work, encompassing themes of religion, imperialism and gender within its broad and fascinating scope.

An excellent audio book.

An unforgettable novel brilliantly read by Juliet Stevenson. These characters will stay with me forever . Although very long so many issues are covered one's interest is held throughout. The language is beautiful, enhanced by the way in which it is read. A moving and uplifting book.

a combination made in heaven

a great story telling from Juliet Stevenson combined with the great stories. my question is how the author is so learnt about other cultures and foreign cities into such depths at that time, to be able to write as an advocate for a group minor? Impressive and a satisfactory ending,l😙😃

Full of so many thought-provoking ideas

This is my favorite novel of George Eliot's. She conveys so much understanding of how men & women lived at the time: their inner thoughts & motivations, their terrible choices, their limitations, their relationships with each other. I found it fascinating that the central theme revolved around Judaism, and read a number of articles regarding Judiasm & George Eliot, which were so interesting. I only wish I could convince my book group to tackle it, because I long to discuss it. And the narration by Juliet Stevenson was incredible - she is truly amazing in the way she brings the story to life & embodies the characters.

Superb

Not sure I would have read this book but to hear Stevenson reading it aloud has bee mesmeric. Plum full of metaphor and simile she annunciation every word perfectly adding modern resonance.

A story of another age

George Elliot is a long drawn out writer whose slow unravelling of some very unpleasant characters could, if you were reading, make you stop very early on. However, the inestimable Juliet Stevenson has, like David Rintoul, a way of keeping you involved even if you are exasperated. I cannot say I enjoyed the story but could listen to the performer indefinitely. I would only recommend this if you are prepared to sit back and listen to all the padding and wallow in a bygone age.

A powerful and intense classic

Brilliant story with a complex cast of characters all drawn with deep psychological detail and empathy. Juliet Stephenson reads this wonderfully with a vocal range of exceptional ability which is a delight to enjoy. The plot thickens and deepens as the book progresses, building up to its intense and satisfying ending.

Exquisite

What an absolutely brilliant story. Eliots understanding of the human character is described in-depth with exquisite language that paints a picture so detailed you can almost smell the scenes. This book made me want to be a better person. As for performance, Juliet Stevenson narration of the story and depiction of Eliots character’s was absorbing and did absolute justice to them all.
