Summary

One of Dickens' most famous novels, this classic is set amid the turbulent times of the French Revolution. The main theme is the rescue of young Charles Darney, a French aristocrat sentenced to the guillotine by the "citizens" of the revolution. Out of the gloomy pall of the guillotine dungeons comes one of literature’s greatest heroes, Sidney Carton, the rescuer of Darney. Who can ever forget Carton's most famous statement? "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

Jack cannot do the accents.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is a great story ruined by the reader's comically off-the-mark accents. The English working class accents were particularly absurd. It was impossible to listen to this in the car without my family falling about laughing.

What did you like best about this story?

It is a wonderful story of sacrifice and the power of love.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jack Sondericker’s performances?

Perhaps Jack reads American literature better? I feel bad saying this, but I would not listen to another book read by him.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There are lessons for me. You make samples available.

Any additional comments?

I will check that any Dickens that I download is read by someone who can do the accents.
