Summary
Maggie went to the window and opened it wide, inhaling the lovely, ozoney air off the sea. Why had she never lived by the sea before? Why had she always looked out on housing estates and not the little white hulls of trawlers bobbing off in the distance?
It's gloriously sunny in Cornwall as the school year starts at the little boarding school by the sea. Maggie, the newest teacher at Downey House, is determined to make her mark - but will it be at the expense of her relationship with safe, dependable Stan?
Simone has won a scholarship and wants to make her parents proud. Forced to share a room with the glossy, pretty, clever girls of Downey House, she needs to find a friend, fast.
Fliss is furious at being sent away from her home. As Simone tries desperately to fit in, Fliss tries desperately to get out.
Over the course of one year, friendships will bloom and lives will be changed forever.

narrator lets it down
Unfortunately the narrator spoke so fast I had to permanently have the speed down to be able to catch what she was saying. Despite this I quite enjoyed the book as a bit of night-time meandering that didn't tax me too much

If you enjoyed Malory Towers then you’ll like this!
A girls’ boarding school on the cliff tops of Cornwall with four towers. That sounds familiar!! This time, however, told from a teacher’s point of view.
Maggie leaves her Govan home and her comprehensive school background and moves to an alien environment with a view to gaining transferable experience. Will she be accepted? Who will be her friend?
We learn the stories of several girls too and their experiences of boarding for the first time.
Lashings of fun and a splash of misery. No lacrosse but a bit of hockey.
I didn’t like the obsession with the weight and eating habits of one of the girls and the comment that, “if she lost weight she’d be quite pretty.”
There’s bullying and ostracising by the Queen Bee and her followers to add to her misery.
I did enjoy this and look forward to the next one (I presume it’s the start of a series!!).

Enjoyable, Lighthearted Read
I’ve just finished listening to ‘Class’ by Jenny Colgan. I enjoyed it being a teacher myself, but was disappointed by the ending… it was very abrupt and there was no resolution between David and Maggie… I’m Scottish and I kept picturing Susan Calman(Cruising presenter) as Maggie, when Maggie was meant to be half her age! I think the narrator made her seem older. I liked the characters though, especially the girls and the storyline with the head teacher. Will definitely read more Jenny Colgan books.

Small adventures, exploring different meanings of the word class
The story is quite good with lots of attention to petty details, where small conflicts and dramas, between likeable characters, take centre stage. The thread of teacher Maggie's storyline, seems a little unresolved at the end, maybe this is resolved in the sequel. Maggie and her pupils despite their different ages, were all equally as engaging to listen to, as characters.

Great Story!
Really enjoyed listening. I didn’t find myself predicting every part of the story but just enjoyed each direction it took. The narration is very easy on the ear - I’m a bit picky but Jilly Bond did it very well.
