Summary

Ryn Tyler didn't intend to kill a demon when she moved to Eagle Valley - or to become the hero of a divine race of angels. She just wants to be a normal teenager, but fate has other plans.

While discovering the secrets of the supernatural, Ryn navigates a complicated relationship with Marek, the guy who can't stop saving her life. But Marek knows more about Ryn's magic than he's letting on.

Only Ryn has the power to stop the coming apocalypse. But there's a demon in Eagle Valley who wants that power for himself - and if Ryn wants to survive, she'll have to fight back.

Fascinating series starter!

So let me just get this out there, I LOVED THIS BOOK! It’s so much more than I expected, and the narration is FABULOUS! This story is full of action, magic, drama and suspense from beginning to end. It pulled me in from the start and I finished in one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and the outstanding narration made the book! Natalie Naudus is a ‘new to me’ narrator and is now a ‘my favorites!’ narrator. She does an excellent job giving each character a unique voice, bringing the story to life and making it easy to get lost in the book. I will most definitely be looking for more of her work! I will also be anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!!!

Great story and great narration!

This was my first Alicia Rades's book and won't be the last. This is a paranormal story with angels and demons and it's so well written! I really appreciate my read/listen to this story. This story is fast-paced, suspenseful, funny and sweet. I love all the characters in this book. In fact, I love all about this book. It's a gem! The main characters Ryn and Marek are perfect together. The storyline is entertaining and really captivating. I can't wait to listen to the next story in this Series. This was my first listen to Natalie Naudus. She has a great voice, very easy to listen. I also love her male voice! I'm looking forward for more books narrated by her. Amazing

Romance, magic, angels and demons fit into a spectacular book. I could see so much of this book come to life in my head as the story flowed by. The narration was spot on and truly wove together an amazing picture. I can't wait to see what happens in later books!

Refreshing

I was given a copy of this audiobook by the author in exchange for an honest review and this is it.
I have to say that I found this story very refreshing and new despite the fact I was a bit hesitant to listen to something that had to do with teens and school.
It has an interesting story and I can tell you that the narrator has done an excellent job.
It's one of those books that you truly enjoy to listen and the voices the narrator does suit the characters.
It's a great start for a series that will totally hook you in...
I need more.

An angel? Not really

The main character Ryn is an older teenager who lives with her mom. Things are tough between them. They constantly move and her mom’s interests and hobbies change often. They move to Eagle Valley and here Ryn befriends another girl. One night they go out to have some fun and she meets Marek and some demons. The reality of her world changes here. Some other characters come into play and now Ryn needs to deal with the revelation she’s an “angel” and learn how to control her magic. Of course there is also the impending apocalypse.

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. I enjoyed the personality of Ryn. She’s a little sarcastic and quite self reliant. I like the story thread involving her schoolmates. This is not a stand alone book since it does not have a resolution . There is a lead up to the next one.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator and I would definitely listen to another. The character voices were well done and the story brought to life. It is a good listen

Despite Audiobook Boom giving this a violence and language rating there is no excessive violence or swearing. I’m not sure, but I think one character may swear a couple times, but I don’t really remember. If so, only a bit. There are no explicit sex scenes.

Interesting new YA fantasy series

Would you consider the audio edition of Chosen by Grace to be better than the print version?

Definitely, the narration really brings out each character.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that it didn't have as much drama and teenage angst as some other YAs

Have you listened to any of Natalie Naudus’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first one. Top notch narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really extreme, but what is it with fantasy YAs these days that where someone in the story wants the female mc to be a baby factory.

Any additional comments?

It was a good enough story, with good history and background. The long battle of the "angels" and the "demons" and her internal battle to not kill anyone. Can't wait for the rest.

YA Fantasy.

I have listened to other works by this narrator and I would recommend listening to her other books that she has narrated. She voiced the characters out and I felt their personality come through.

The story is a bit predictable for me. It has all the classic YA theme. That is not to say it is bad, the author had me intrigued in certain areas but I would have liked to be suprised at some point.

YA might like it more then I did.

Interesting enough but has some flaws...

OK, first of all, it's 3.5 stars for the story...

"Chosen by Grace" is my introduction to the writing skills of Alicia Rades, and on the whole it's quite a good experience. Although I'm not a young adult any more (way past beyond it, really:)), working with 17-19-year-olds on daily basis, having insight into their way of thinking, I like books written for that audience and I look for them quite often. So, I've read a good share of them so far and I have to tell you, most of them seem formulaic, schematic and predictable. This one, however, though still a bit predictable, following the rule: a girl discovers she's magical, she's saved by a handsome dude she instantly falls for (for no obvious reasons but the fact that he's handsome and rescues her) and then is expected to fulfill a prophecy/save the world/you name it, has also some unexpected twists on old tropes and brilliant imagery.

What I think are the strenghts of the book? The interesting take on the genealogy of creatures we call angels and demons; although it's also its weakness in a way. It may feel informative on the pages, but while you listen to an audio version, the information, containing a ot of strange names which you can't see, just hear, is given so fast and in such abundance that I still don't really understand it. I'd have to listen to it again to fully grasp the idea.
Another strength is Ms Rade's ability of vivid description; the final battle is wonderfully depicted, with a lot of suspence and emotions, and with the situation changing at a really fast pace, as it should be when it comes to serious fights... The flying lesson is also beautiful both in how it is shown and how Ryn's feelings are conveyed to the listener.

So what did I find faulty with it? Well, there are a few improbabilities when it comes to the characters' behaviour; some reactions to some events are either too weak or too, well, sane... I also had a feeling that some scenes were totally unnecessary and didn't serve the plot in any way, not even to explain or justify someone's actions (like the whole plotline involving the school rivalry - what is it there for? It has nothing to do with the main plot, it doesn't really jeopardize the relationship between Ryn and Marek, it doesn't even explain anything about Marek's past.... Unless it's there to be developed in future books - but I still think it could have been totally omitted...)

As for the narration by Ms Natalie Naudus, it's quite fast, but still clear enough. Although there were a few instances when male voices sounded a bit too similar to one another, I still was able not to lose the track of who's speaking, so that's OK. On the whole, it's a sound interpretation of the book.

So, generally, although it may not be the greatest book in the genre, it is still good enough to give you about 4 hours of fun and make you want to listen to the next book in the series (probably:))

Great Beginning To The Series

Any additional comments?

I was a bit apprehensive about getting this book as it was much shorter than the typical book I get. I am happy I ended up getting it!

The story wasn’t quite what I expected. Clearly, angels are involved based on the cover and publisher’s description, but there were some interesting twists that caught me off guard and kept me from wanting to put the book down.

Those that don’t care for a lot of character embellishment will like the “onto the action” style the author takes. I would have liked a little more character setup and background, but it worked as-is and I’m actually a bit cranky the next book isn’t on Audible at the moment as I do want to know what happens next!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
