Choose FI: A Blueprint for Financial Independence

A common resolution set at the beginning of a new year is to “get my financial house in order”. But how can you build a house, let alone pour any kind of foundation, without a blueprint? There are dozens of books and gurus trying to push their advice and tell you how to spend and invest your money. And then, there are three suburban dads just trying to make the world a little bit better.

Meet Brad Barrett and Jonathan Mendonsa of the award-winning ChooseFI podcast and Chris Mamula of the popular blog Can I Retire Yet? They have walked the talk and now want to share their knowledge with you. Together, these three regular guys will show you how they made the relatively simple choices to reclaim decades of their lives, and how you can too.

Distilling the best of the popular ChooseFI podcast, this audiobook pulls from the collective knowledge of those who have decided to build a lifestyle around their passions instead of allowing their finances to dictate their future. These stories demonstrate universal principles, giving you the opportunity to pick the elements that are the most applicable to your financial situation and “choose your own adventure”.

The audiobook covers a wide range of topics that will help you build a strong financial foundation:

  • Developing a growth mindset
  • Defining your values and aligning them with your spending
  • Cutting years from your estimated retirement date
  • Questioning the status quo on “required expenses”
  • Cutting travel expenses and putting family vacations within your reach
  • Learning how to earn more and live with abundance
  • Updating the common accepted wisdom on college education and the debt associated with it
  • Cutting through the noise on investing to discover strategies that work
  • Showing how to implement investment strategies that enable the lifestyle you desire while controlling downside risk

Whether you have mountains of debt now or are recently debt-free and wondering what to do next, Choose FI: Your Blueprint to Financial Independence will give you the information to guide your next move.

An absolute essential for everyone

Whether you are new to the concept of ‘financial independence’ or know a fair bit about it already from reading and listening hundreds of articles and podcasts constantly as I have, this book is quite possibly the most well-rounded and eloquent piece of literature I have come across that explains what FI is and how to achieve it. I highly recommend it!

Choosing FI, Better every Day

I loved the organization of the book. It takes a large amount of great information and brings it together into useful actionable steps to improve every facet of the FI lifestyle. As a pharmacist who took out way too much in student loans, it hit on many levels for me to find true value and purpose in my life, and I relate a ton to Jonathan I’m feeling the weight of a career that looked great on paper but has been different in practice. I look forward to getting closer to FI every day moving forward with lots of help from ChooseFI

Good book, awkward narration

If you follow their podcast, you’ll especially enjoy this book. It’s not unlike many of the other financial independence books out there so if you’ve dabbled, you may not learn anything new but they give great examples to aid you wherever you are in your personal finance journey. Very actionable tips, very relatable story.

Structured perfectly

I liked that he summarized a lot of the ideas of the Choose FI contributors and his own experiences. It’s a quick listen and the content is easily received and feels easy to implement.

The best book on FI!

I've read/listened to a lot of books on FI, but this is by far the best one. I read all of the books referenced in here and love how they showed the many different paths to FI and didn't glorify one over the other. They were honest about the benefits and pitfalls and continued to emphasize how every path is different while giving you helpful, easy to follow tops for each one.

I definitely recommend for someone just starting out on the path to FI or someone like myself who has pushed and pulled in many different directions and struggling to figure out what path is best for me and my life. The most important point of this book is that no matter what path you start on in your journey to FI, you can always change down there road. So simple, but just this piece of advice removed so much stress off of me.

Excellent and thorough

Excellent info and very thorough content. My wife has listened to some of their podcasts and wanted me to listen to this book during my work commute. I really appreciated how many proverbial rocks they turned over. The info on travel rewards was very new to me and gave us some new ideas for managing travel expenses.
One reviewer said they felt like the narrator was talking down to them. I never, ever got this inclination.
I do wish the chapters were labeled with words. It would make it much easier to go back and re-read specific chapters.
