About this listen

When an exotic stranger, Vianne Rocher, arrives in the French village of Lansquenet and opens a chocolate boutique directly opposite the church, Father Reynaud denounces her as a serious moral danger to his flock - especially as it is the beginning of Lent, the traditional season of self-denial.

As passions flare and the conflict escalates, the whole community takes sides. Can the solemnity of the church compare with the sinful pleasure of a chocolate truffle?

I've read this book before but wanted to catch up again on the series before reading Strawberry Thief. I loved the voice of Joanne Harris who really took me away into the world of Vianne and her daughter. I really enjoyed the clash of the two main characters and how the story included many of the different villagers.

Lovely book

One of my favourite books quite magical in it’s telling of how a town can be healed if it’s community come together

Full of wonder

The two protagonists telling opposing versions of events propelled the story along beautifully. The literary conjouring of a little French town with it's characters and their secrets was quite brilliant

Lovely Story, well told

I have seen the film Chocolat at least a dozen times and adore it. This is even better and is superbly written and performed by the author. I love it so much!

Wonderful

I loved this story - some beautiful imagery, a great plotline, interesting themes and characters, and a digestible length.
However, I was disappointed with the choice in narrator - an English rather than French accent! Her voice was a little too bright for my liking, but that's personal preference.

Wonderful story - shame about the narrator

An intertwined storyline, beautifully written and narrated. The different POVs were interesting and helped progress the story in an interesting way.

This book is a wonderful, multi-layered masterpiece. The author leads you into the narrow streets of the village and into the very heart of its inhabitants. Her internal dialogue, and that of her nemisis move the story along with a natural and appealing grace. The film was great, the book is greater.

I read this book years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m now visually impaired and so often listen to books rather than read them.

It was wonderful to listen to the book read by the author. The story was just as good as I remembered, better actually than when I read it as I could relax and just listen to the beautiful tale as it was meant to be told.

Brilliant!

Lovely listen, I’d forgotten how good this book is

I am not sure which is better. Joanne reading the book or the book itself.

Lovely story about a newcomer to a French village who opens a chocolate shop. Interesting mix of magic and religion, life and death.
