Loved by my son
My son (5) has been listening to this whilst in the bath recently and you can see the joy in his eyes as he listens.
He thinks Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the best name for a car and is mesmerised by the idea that the car can be real with its own personality and be as much a part of the family as the people themselves.
The story is excellently read by David Tennant, although I'm not sure why he is reading with an English accent and not his native Scottish one. Sometimes older books can date/age and be less accessible to children today. This book has aged well; the language isn't too difficult or wordy and the overall ideas still resonate.
We would recommend it.

A Beautifully Narrated Classic
David Tennant has a way of making a book come alive, so he is the perfect choice for a book about a car coming alive! He narrates this classic well and I enjoyed it very much.
I have seen the film many times, but I had no idea how different the book is! It is much more full of adventure and daring than the film (which is more of a romance), and though it certainly reflects the time in which it was written, the story itself carries a wonderful timelessness.

Not even close to the musical movie
Well I have discovered that my favorite movie from childhood is only Very Loosely based on Ian Fleming's book of the same name.
The only thing familiar from the movie I love so much was the car and the kids' names, everything else is different, no grandpa, no Truly, no child catcher or Baron. It was very odd to have it be familiar yet not at the same time.
I’m still trying to get over how different this was than what I was expecting; it is more similar to the Bond stories than the musical movie is. There are crooks and their hideout and trying to get away. This was a fun book but just know it is nothing like the movie of your childhood.
David Tennant's narration was fabulous though, great accents and voices and characters! Tennant’s narration made this book even better.

Perfect for road trips with (or without!) young kids!
This story was wonderful and charming, and had my 8,6 and 5 year olds gripped! They kept asking us if we could please turn it back on every time we got back into the car, and my husband and I were happy to oblige. tenant's performance is just wonderful. We are huge fans of his thanks to dr who and broadchurch — but his performance here was a real treat! I appreciated too that the mother in this story was just as adventurous as the father and two kids. She's voice her concerns, but she was just as game as the rest of them to see what this car could do! I enjoyed the overall message: always choose adventure or else you'll find you've lead a very dull life! Exactly!! My husband and I are considering another roadtrip soon just so we can enjoy the second book in the same epic fashion.

Rollicking Good Fun!
Any additional comments?
When I heard the audio sample of this book with David Tenant's voice, I knew he would do a perfect narration of a lovely story and I was right. The story itself is a delight, but what he does with the various voices make this recording top-notch. It is unlike the movie as many have noted, and not typical Ian Fleming, but taken on its own merit it is a great adventure story with sly British humor woven throughout. A real treat for family listening.

David Tennant and Ian Fleming--a great combination
Any additional comments?
This review is of the audio version read by David Tennant. Unfortunately, many reviews are NOT of the audio version on this site. The book is a lot of fun and well worth two hours of your time. David Tennant is clearly a fan of Fleming, judging from the interview at the end (a wonderful bonus for Tennant fans).

Playing this at about 85-90x sounded great, faster and it was like a runaway train. The story is a family favorite, (thankfully) bearing little resemblance to the movie. Charming, witty, whimsical - all the good stuff you could want with a side of derring-do.
