Summary

6,000 years ago, the land is one dark forest. Its people are hunters and gatherers. They know every tree and herb and they know how to survive in a world steeped in enchantment, menace, and powerful magic. Until an ambitious and malignant force conjures up a demon; a demon so evil that it can be contained only in the body of a ferocious bear; a demon so hungry for death that it slays everything it sees; a demon with the potential to destroy the world. Only Torak and his wolf companion can save the world.

"The kind of story you dream of reading and all too rarely find. The vivid prose leaps off the page." ( The Times)

Amazing!

I was hooked from the first chapter! It’s heartwarming, adventurous, and a little bit gruesome at times! It made me laugh and feel like crying. The main character is quick witted and relatable. I loved that you hear it from the dogs perspective too. Overall an incredible story!

Fantastic narration of a terrific story

I first read these books when I was about 10 years old and absolutely loved being transported back in time to an era where humans were hunter-gatherers and lived in harmony with nature. The supernatural element was the cherry on top!
When, 8 years later, I found this audio version, I purchased it mostly for nostalgia’s sake - I wanted to listen to something familiar and comforting. I didn’t expect to become once more entranced by this fantastic story. Michelle Paver’s world-building is superb and the plot is very well-placed.
Sir Ian McKellen’s narration is also one of the best I’ve heard. His voice suits the darker parts of the story and the slight voices he puts on allow the dialogue to be followed easily without distracting from the prose by being over-the-top.
I’m definitely going to be listening to the rest of this series now! Would highly recommend, for children, childhood fans, or adults wanting to indulge in a simply written but complexly built story.

great adventure and story of loss and friendship

from snippets overheard from my 7 year old son listening to it, I felt compelled to listen myself... we both enjoyed the story, a real adventure with nail biting (for kids) challenges and dangers. Overcome by courage, wit, trust and grit. a great story, read brilliantly by sir Ian. Will be listening to more in the series...
