Summary

A truly original debut novel from an extraordinarily talented new voice in children's books.

Laugh, cry and wonder at this race-against-time story of a boy who travels back to 1984 to prevent a go-kart accident and save his father's life....

My dad died twice. Once when he was 39 and again four years later, when he was 12. The first time had nothing to do with me. The second time definitely did, but I would never even have been there if it hadn't been for his 'time machine'....

When Al Chaudhury discovers his late dad's time machine, he finds that going back to the 1980s requires daring and imagination. It also requires lies, theft, burglary and setting his school on fire. All without losing his pet hamster, Alan Shearer....

Critic reviews

"Touching, silly and exciting by turns, this thrilling little book is an inventive take on time travel for children. Sure to be a hit with fans of R.J. Palacio's Wonder...an unforgettable, madcap story from a bright new talent in children's fiction." ( Waterstones)

Sublime storytelling

Full disclosure: I am a 48 woman and not in the habit of reading children's books. I have no idea how this book came to be in my Audible library but I am so glad it was and that my curiosity got the better of me....

The main character's relationships are beautifully described and the author has captured the pain of losing a parent and conveys this sensitively and accurately. I have been on the edge of my seat as this story has kept me company on my car journeys over the last fortnight. I
have stayed in the car despite arriving at my destination to hear out the end of a chapter and lived the highs and lows of Al's adventures through the decades. I'd love to give Ross Welford a great big hug and thank him for such a joyous tale. So too Assad Zaman whose narration was sheer perfection. The whole package is sublime storytelling. If this was made into a film, I'd be first in the queue at the cinema!

Superb!

Excellent story beautifully narrated. Age 8-12 seems about right. Some serious themes: the death of a parent; cruelty to an animal; bullying; crime. Nothing too scary though. Minor mention of people "doing it" and of being a virgin, which may be awkward with younger children. We enjoyed it as much as our boys.

Slow start, into a enjoyable fantastic journey

Take a while to get going, but then enthralled the kids and engaged the parents.

What’s a hamster got to do with it?

I kept wondering, as I listened to this complicated plot unfold. The animal seemed a cuddly token. (Not so, it transpired.) Not that I cared about this seeming extra. The main character and his family, past, present and future, were completely engaging and the ticking clock plot kept it exciting . The concept of time travel is managed in a disarmingly ordinary way. I loved this listen and recommend it to adults too.Well done Ross Welford and Assam Zaman!

A good, involving story, well told

Listened to Time Travelling with a Hamster while travelling in the car on holiday. 2 boys, aged 9 and 11, mum and dad all enjoyed the story equally- a rare thing! The plot was intelligent, a little bit different and had us all involved. The narration was also excellent.
