Just like people and animals, plants need nourishment too. This educational short from iMinds introduces young listeners to photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Performer Leah Vandenberg packs a lot of information into this brief survey while nevertheless using straightforward language, so that children will find these important scientific principles easy to follow. In addition to the science behind photosynthesis, the animated Aussie actress also discusses its environmental significance, noting the essential role plants play in converting carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Summary

Learn about the process of Photosynthesis with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds.

You may have asked yourself before now: if plants are alive, why don’t they eat? The answer is they do eat, but not in the same way as humans and animals. Green plants, algae and some bacteria are able to use energy from the sun as a kind of food that enables them to live and grow. The complicated process by which this happens is called photosynthesis. The word ‘photo’ comes from the Greek word phos, meaning ‘light’ and the word ‘synthesis’ means to form something. Together, these words describe the fact that ‘photosynthesis’ is a way of forming something from light.
