Summary

Eight-year-old Tomas hates school, hates books and hates stories. Forced to visit the library, he stops to listen to the magical tales that the Unicorn Lady spins - tales that draw him in, making themselves part of him and changing the course of his life for ever...making him believe in unicorns.

Set against the backdrop of war-torn Europe, I Believe in Unicorns explores the power of stories to transform lives. Produced in association with the Unicorn Theatre, the first purpose-built professional theatre for children in the UK, located on London's South Bank.

Critic reviews

"I Believe in Unicorns needs to be bought for every library, school and home ... to share with as many children as we can so that they can experience its magic for themselves." ( The Bookseller,)
"An enchanting tale ... the latest offering from ex-Children's Laureate Morpurgo is every bit as good as his previous work. With simple sentence structures, an endearing storyteller and a captivating storyline, this makes a great book for children who have just started to feel confident reading on their own." ( Junior)

HATRED of audio purchase

What disappointed you about I Believe in Unicorns?

The book is lovely. But DON'T DOWNLOAD the audio recording through Amazon. I only got it because it said it was a free credit and the cost of the audio is prohibitive. But it's a complete nightmare to get the sound file to transfer to any device, to say, listen to in the car. Amazon seem to want to make it as hard as possible, go back to the 80s, fry your brain, in every way. It's just designed to make you cry and to NEVER USE AUDIBLE AGAIN. I'd advise their competitor, even if slightly more expensive.

What could Michael Morpurgo have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He's great.

What didn’t you like about Michael Morpurgo’s performance?

Love it in print.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from I Believe in Unicorns?

None.

Any additional comments?

Too much death and destruction in his books. Also too few female heroines.
