Summary

The five children have grown up, and World War I has begun in earnest. The sand fairy has become a creature of stories...until, for the first time in 10 years, he suddenly reappears.

Before this last adventure ends, all will be changed; the two younger children will have seen the Great War from every possible viewpoint, and the war's impact will be felt right at the heart of their family.

Critic reviews

"Saunders has created a simply brilliant book.... E. Nesbit would be proud and honoured by this beautifully crafted, funny, heart-breaking story." ( Daily Mail)
"Saunders's novel does what fiction does best: it focuses on individuals we care about in order to make a universal point." ( Guardian)

A wonderful book

It is so rare to find a sequel to a great series of books which really works. Beautifully crafted and presented,

stereotypes can get annoying

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Not for me and (if I could influence my children...) I wouldn't let them near it.

What could Kate Saunders have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Hold back on the stereotypes - come on Kate!

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jilly Bond?

The frightfully posh voice was probably suitable for the book

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I was hopeful that someone could come up with a child's-eye view of the pre-war and WW1 years - so marks for trying!
