Editor reviews

Alice's trip down the rabbit hole, and her run-ins with the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts, persists as an enduring classic of literature. Lewis Carroll's novel has long been a pillar of pop culture, inspiring the 1951 Disney hit and influencing the works of figures as diverse as Salvador Dali, Jefferson Airplane, and Tim Burton. Carroll's whimsy is perfectly matched by the award-winning actress Miriam Margoyles (The Age of Innocence, Babe, Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films), who brings her trademark depth of characterization and a wonderful loopiness to make this a boisterously fun experience.

Summary

On an ordinary summer's afternoon, Alice tumbles down a hole - and an extraordinary adventure begins. In a strange world with even stranger characters, she meets a rabbit with a pocket watch, joins a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and plays croquet with the Queen! Lost in this fantasy land, Alice finds herself growing more and more curious by the minute.

NOoooooooo!

Alice in Wonderland has got to be my favourite book of all time. I can recite almost all of it word for word.
Miriam Margolyes has got to be one of my favourite narrators and all round outrageously funny people.
What could possible go wrong???.
Whay the bad review??
She turned it into a version of Alice in wonderland meets the bleakest of Dickens novels...which she does brilliantly might I add
It was beautifully read as you would expect no less from Miriam, but it was done in a way, that was somehow joyless and bizarrely very dark.
In contrast I have on CD Alan Bennett reading the same book and it is light and funny and exactly the way I want Alice in Wonderland to be... so I am returning it and I shall replace the Alan Bennett CD with this one
I am bitterly disappointecd..

Wonderful story read wonderfully

What did you like best about this story?

Alice is a delight; the bonkers characters of her adventures are delightful and the writing is perfection.

Which character – as performed by Miriam Margolyes – was your favourite?

The Caterpillar. He's the best character anyway and Miriam Margolyes performs him perfectly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have been happy to but I enjoyed spreading it over a number of sittings.

A classic

Would you try another book written by Lewis Carroll or narrated by Miriam Margoyles?

I might try Through the Looking Glass, as people have said to me that you don't need to enjoy Alice's Adventures to enjoy Looking Glass. I'm not sure about the narrator, she didn't quite hit the spot for me, and I was therefore never fully engaged in the story.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

If I'm honest, I only vaguely remember it, and at that point, I was sort of glad to be done with the book.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

It is a film, and I love the film. The book is not very much like that, and it felt like it dragged quite a bit, despite being so short.

Any additional comments?

It's not like I don't like classics or a slower pace - quite the contrary. But this felt pointless and uninteresting, and the writing was definitely not top shelf.

Don't know what all the fuss is about

She's a rude, naughty little girl with no concern for consequences. I can see why people like the imagery but I can also see why people think Carroll was on drugs. Disappointed after all the fuss.
