Summary

Sara Crewe is the brightest, richest, and most generous girl in Miss Minchin’s school for girls, and her father gives her everything she might desire. But when her beloved father dies, Sara’s friends and prized possessions are suddenly taken away, and she is banished to the attic and forced to work as a common drudge. Fed only crumbs, she still saves enough to feed her pet rat, and she tells wonderful stories to comfort Becky, the kitchen maid. Using her special ability to play make-believe, she transforms her hardships into an unforgettable adventure. And soon, even her wildest wishes begin to come true, as her real identity is revealed once and for all.

This touching classic has been a favorite with generations of children and adults who have delighted in Sara’s happiness, wept over her sorrows, and perhaps shared her need: to be recognized as someone unique and special.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849 -1924) was an English-born author of romances and books for children. After moving to America in 1865, she established a popular reputation with the publication of That Lass o’ Lowrie’s in 1877. She is best known for such novels as Little Lord Fauntleroy, The Little Princess, and The Secret Garden.

A touching story

I am a 36-year old scientist, yet on many occassions, while listening to this book, my eyes filled with tears. Let that testimony serve as a review of this wonderful and touching story.

Fantastic!

We listened to this as a family on a long trip from London to Scotland. We are two boys (12 and 10), a girl (7), plus Mum and Dad. Comments from the family: “A brilliant story to listen with the family” (7year old); “A great, exciting story, full of surprises. I really liked it.” (10 year old): “I really enjoyed it and am glad I listened to it, even though I found it a little slow on n the middle. It’s also really really well read.” (12 yr old); “Beautifully written with lovely rich language and wonderful positive messages.” (Dad); “Wonderfully old fashioned, wholesome family read. A little predictable but who cares! It’s got all the ingredients of a great story - a loveable heroine, an evil adversary, joys and great losses restored by a happy endingWe all loved it and it provided much food for conversation - especially around the rich vocabulary.” ( Mum). We highly recommend it.

Awful narration!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator's voice needs to be deleted and re-recorded with someone else at the helm.
This sounds like it's being read out by a computer! I can't stand it! My children won't entrain listening to it but I've had it too long to ask for a refund now. It's awful!

Would you ever listen to anything by Frances Hodgson Burnett again?

Yes, so long as the narrator is different

How could the performance have been better?

It could be 100% better!

Wonderful

I loved this every bit as much as I did when I read it as a child. FHB has an amazing way with words, and her literary style is wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this book that I loved in my childhood.
The reading of it on the recording I found was better speeded up slightly. I listened to it at 1.3. This was a really good telling of the story.

Great performance

It's an enthralling story and perfect for bedtime reading. Do not watch the film…just read the book.

An enchanting story

After finishing “the making of a marchioness”, by the same author, I felt compelled to listen to another of her stories, and this one did not disappoint. I think today’s kids could genuinely benefit from listening to books like this, which tell such tales of courage in the face of hardship. I know that I came away from the book feeling so much more thankful for all the things I take for granted each day.
