Summary

The New York Times best-selling co-author of Gwendy's Button Box brings his signature thrilling prose to this story of small-town evil that combines the storytelling of Stephen King with the true-crime suspense of Michelle McNamara.

In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumour begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI, are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman - and he's playing games with them. For a once peaceful community trapped in the depths of paranoia and suspicion, it feels like a nightmare that will never end.

Recent college graduate Richard Chizmar returns to his hometown just as a curfew is enacted and a neighbourhood watch is formed. In the midst of preparing for his wedding and embarking on a writing career, he soon finds himself thrust into the real-life horror story. Inspired by the terrifying events, Richard writes a personal account of the serial killer's reign of terror, unaware that these events will continue to haunt him for years to come.

A clever, terrifying and heartrending work of metafiction, "Chasing the Boogeyman does what true crime so often cannot: it offers both chills and a satisfying conclusion" (Stephen King). Chizmar's "brilliant...absolutely fascinating, totally compelling and immediately poignant" (C.J. Tudor, New York Times best-selling author) writing is on full display in this truly unique audiobook that will haunt you long after listening.

Brilliant 🤩

Read in tandem with the physical copy, highly recommend - gripping from beginning to end and the narrator was a great fit for the story 😊

Stephen King-lite yarn

Any constant readers of Stephen King will see similarities to the great man’s work here, only done with less finesse. I think this would’ve benefited from a sharp edit – the initial scene setting takes far too long and the folksy style occasionally becomes bland. Nevertheless, I read this during the week leading up to Halloween, and it provided a good enough quick read. The story runs out of steam towards the end and I won’t rush to read another of his novels.

The narrator was fine, if a little unimaginative with his voices, and he pushes the matter-of-fact style too much in some places - he doesn’t even change tone when describing acts of horrific murder, which is jarring and strange.

Great listen

Great listen and superb reader for this true-fiction novel. One or two questions remain unanswered but that’s serial killers for you!

Some may like it but......

There's no doubt Richard is a great writer and some people may like this book.
Don't get me wrong there is a story here and an interesting way of telling it, but for me it went on a little longer like a long joke with a haha at the end, rather than a belly laugh. If you get my point.
Interesting foot note, i'm adopted........but luckily not one of the 16%.....or am i?

Loved it!

Like nothing I’ve read/heard before but most enjoyable. Narrated to a little getting used to but once I did I loved it.

Awful

I’m not really sure what the author is trying to achieve with this style of writing! I didn’t finish it as after 3 hrs I didn’t remember one single character name and felt absolutely nothing for the half baked true crime /horror / thriller / not a clue what it wants to be ! Don’t bother
