Summary

Charlie and her two companions must find a way out of the big city, or die trying.

Charlie is good at her work. As a hard-charging drug rep with the brains and talent to make it to the top, she has the world at her feet. Then, the lights went out, and everything changed.

An EMP decimates the United States, leaving the country in the dark. With modern technology suddenly and permanently turned off, society's dark side quickly takes over. Caught on the road, she teams up with two new companions and they fight their way towards safety and freedom. Criminals, gangs, and worse stand between them and the safety of a friend's farm.

The 'Going Home' Series Goes To Town

The "Going Home" series (the precursor to this series) puts you there, immersed in an apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic situation, complete with monsters in healthy human bodies. This "Charlie's" series is set within the same situation, except the story begins in the city, not the country, with completely different characters. And... we learn early who caused the trouble.
Narrator Duke Fontaine was transparent (that's good) as he read "Going Home." In this series he's not as good: Lots of awkward micro-pauses in sentences, which occasionally distract. More distracting is Fontaine's male voice. You see, Charlie is telling the story, and she's a young woman.
Overall, however, I find this stuff compelling, so I keep listening and listening.

Disappointing

It says nowhere on the description that this is a prequel. Absolute garbage. The rest of the books are good but this left me wanting my money back.

Not long enough

So I’ve read all the Going Home series and when I seen this I got excited. It’s just like the others and really gets you into the story. The issue I have is it’s not long enough for what you pay for. Most books are 9-11hrs long where this is around 5 so you don’t get a lot for the first book. Hopefully the rest of this series is longer. If you like the Going Home series you’ll like this as well.

It's just getting started

I think this book was mostly a set up for the next ones, but it seems like it's going to be yet again another pretty good story from A. American.

Read Going Home First

YOU SHOULD READ THIS SERIES! After you start with Morgan's story in the Going Hone series, it will make this one so much more suspenseful. I'm not sure what I like more, the story or Duke Fontaine's performance. This series and its predecessor are of the few I've listened to on audible and felt that I got more by listening than I would have if I had read the words on paper and where more is left to the imagination.
Loved the chapter on the plane, the authors do a great job of packing the story with technical information without distracting from the characters and story. A. American is a master of the show don't tell principal.

Not as good as the survivalist series

As usual Duke Fontaine did an amazing job, I just wish the writer stuck with the same style of writing used in the survivalist series. This book jumped around from character to character and made is hard to follow. I won't be buying the rest of the books.

This is not Going Home...unfortunately.

It is an attempt but a failed one. Maybe the story redeems itself in time, but not my time. I could be wrong.
