Summary

Charles Paris returns in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Simon Brett’s humorous theatrical mystery, starring Bill Nighy.

A job in pantomime seems the perfect way to spend the Christmas season for Charles, but the cast of Cinderella are a motley crew from reality TV and Charles finds himself having to explain the traditions of panto to their baffled American star whose career is on a downward trajectory.

When the star is shot dead, and Charles finds the body, he finds himself under suspicion. As the slapstick makes way for a murder investigation, he decides to clear his name by doing some sleuthing of his own. With a host of suspects and the body count rising, the line 'they're behind you' soon begins to take on a very sinister meaning indeed....

Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Skylight, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) stars as Charles Paris, with Suzanne Burden as his wife Frances, in this funny and fast-paced dramatisation by Jeremy Front.

Written by Jeremy Front, based on the novel by Simon Brett.

Loved it straight from the start thanks to the great Bill Nighy and cast. Would like it to have been longer but thoroughly enjoyed. Would highly recommend.

Ongoing delight in this series

Bill Nighy is a delight and this whole series of adaptions are light and fun. The only downside is they're quite short. less than 2 hours so a very quick listen.

there is one slightly odd thing - there's a piece of business with him changing his trousers at his agents office, which I'm fairly sure also happens, almost identically in another of these adaptions (I've not read the novels at all). It may well be repeated by the BBC adaptors, but... it slightly threw me to hear this charming scene once again.

Other than that, I await more of this series. It would be great to have the very earliest books available too.

Great performances as usual

Much better than the original book. Charles is funnier and less of a swine, and the modernisation is welcome. Attitudes do change over time! There are out loud laughs to be had.

Where does Charles Paris: The Cinderella Killer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love these stories and they cast that narrate them

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charles Paris: The Cinderella Killer?

at the end when they ditch the big family Christmas party thing as a bad job

Have you listened to any of Bill Nighy and Suzanne Burden ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

its up to a very high previous standard

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

they stories always make me laugh at some point

Any additional comments?

I love these stories and Bill Nighy telling them, there always to listenable to and I frequently go back to them time and again.

Another winner from the Charles Paris team...

I’m a big fan of the Charles Paris series featuring Bill Nighy, and this title certainly keeps the standard flying. Short on work, as ever, Charles accepts a panto season in Margate, which boasts the latest Reality TV star in the cast plus a bona-fide Hollywood name as main star. All starts well, until tensions and cracks begin to appear, and then a cast member is found dead on the beach.

Nothing is simple in Charles’ world, and the sub-plot here is that his ‘semi-detached’ wife Frances wants to have an old-fashioned Christmas, which Charles reluctantly says he will help out with. Add to this his fraught relationship with his money-grabbing agent Maurice, and an obsessive and potentially violent stalker, you get the idea. And all the while, there’s a murder to solve…

The scripts move along at a good pace, reminiscent of Alan Ayckbourn at his best.

Makes me wish I had a long car journey to do…

Jeremy Front, smashing

the only negative about this performance is waiting the 6 to 12 months for another. favorite lines: Charles " I can see your centerpiece" Frances: "if that line isn't in the panto, I'm not going" hilarious!

Still crackling!

Done with the usual wit and verve of all players (although attempted American accents were kinda ... odd).

Charles Paris Rules

Bill Nighy and Suzanne Burden are fabulous as always as Charles and Frances. Another smashing time with the whole crew. The different rings on Charles’ phone alone are worth the credit.

Bill Nighy is a treat

The cast and performances (esp. Bill Nighy) are the reasons to listen to these charming but not terribly well plotted mysteries.

A delight.

I love the Charles Paris stories. Bill Nighy is perfect in the role. I laughed out loud (very loud) on many occasions. The stories are very English, as are the characters , perhaps that should read eccentric, but that just adds to their charm. Can't wait for more of them.
