A heart-thumping, no-holds-barred murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.

Some secrets won't stay buried . . .

A standard exhumation becomes anything but for private investigator Theodore Tate when bodies begin bubbling to the surface of the cemetery lake. Tate knows he has to let it go and let his former colleagues in the police deal with it. But when the coffin is opened and its occupant is not the old man supposed to be inside, he knows he cannot walk away. But he cannot let the police keep digging, because they are getting dangerously close to digging up the real truth: the truth about him.

With the evidence mounting against him, Tate must use his skills to stay ahead of the police and out of jail in order to find a killer. A killer on a mission. A person who will kill again and again. A person who will turn Tate into the very man he despises.

I’m not sure that I disliked anything. It was odd that the accents were English and Irish when the setting was in New Zealand, but the narration seems to work well for the characters.
The story is original and a bit crazy but it kept me listening.
The protagonist is complex - gives the impression of being on the side of the angels but also out of control and dangerous - capable of anything you feel to find his own kind of justice. Each time he crosses a line I kind of gasped. And maybe that’s the appeal.

Original and strangely compelling

I love this novel and I want to listen to the rest of the series. The narrator is very good but he;s English and the novel is set in New Zealand. It sounds wrong when he reads the New Zealand English.

Great novel, wrong narrator

Not sure why this doesn’t have better reviews….I thought it was an excellent book with depth of story and some great twists I didn’t see coming.
The narration was brilliant but the story would make more sense if small adaptations were made when using a British narrator - ie, a UK setting and far fewer americanisms in the text, but the book was still excellent nevertheless.

Excellent book - deserves better reviews

Great story and characters, plot twists and shocking discoveries, all narrated in the style of Thomas the tank engine :(
