Story
There are very few national relationships quite as complicated and enigmatic as the one that exists between the English and the Irish. For two peoples so interconnected by geography and history, the depth of animosity that is often expressed is difficult at times to understand. At the same time, historic links of family and clan, and common Gaelic roots, have at times fostered a degree of mutual regard, interdependence, and cooperation that is also occasionally hard to fathom. During World War I, for example, Ireland fought for the British Empire as part of that empire.

Terrible pronunciation of Irish words.
Very dissapointing audiobook. All the good the writer did in finding this information and putting it into a book was runied by the incorrect pronunciation of all the Irish words. Couldn't concentrate on the story and others that don't know these words will be learning them wrong now. It's not hard to do a bit of research or simply ask an Irish person the correct pronunciation, there is enough of us out there. Ruined the whole book.

Awful
Waste of time and money. More of this was about the inner meaning of myth than the legends themselves! Very abbreviated legends, too.
Don't get me started on the mispronunciations!

Good introduction to Celtic Mythology. I am glad I got this one in audio version. Because it is a bit dry, and I think it we’ve hard to get through by reading it.

Interesting Overview
Irish history & mythology are interests of mine so while I found the subject matter interesting, at times I felt the author was trying to cover too much in as short a time as possible. This is definitely an overview, not an in-depth study, nor a full retelling of the Irish myths. Unfortunately, I don't think the narrator was given much instruction in how to pronounce names & places which made it difficult to follow him at times. Also his speech was very rapid, so changes in topic were more than a little abrupt. Still as this is a specialized topic, & Gaelic is not an easy language, I think you have to give the narrator some leeway....

As informative as a last minute college paper
Reads like the author threw a bunch of facts about the Celts into a blender and dumped out whatever came about. Admittedly, A “Hasty History” can’t do much more than scratch the surface of Celtic mythology and is probably only meant to inspire the reader to go into further research on their own, this still feels rather shallow. This is not helped by the way the book jumps around from one subject to the next without any apparent rhyme or reason, for example jumping from the story of Finn Mac Cumhail joining the Fianna to a history of the Celts and then to talking about Selkies.
It does not help that the narrator’s pronunciation of names and places is spotty and inconsistent.
In short, don’t expect more than a really superficial summary. You would be better off with Wikipedia.

recordings seem to be missing
in chapter 5 with a little over 6 minutes remaining, some of the recording seems to be missing. Also, I have never heard Samhain pronounced Sam-hane. I thought it was pronounced sow-in, although I am skilled in Gaelic language pronunciation. Otherwise, pretty good.

Every knows the Celts were a little crazy, and genius at the same time. Did you know they believed in mythological creatures? If not, go watch Brave again..... or listen to this book.

Celtic myths and folklore are all recognizable throughout history and yet, we fail to acknowledge them as part of the most important mythological heritage.

Celtic mythology at its best
I didn't know much about Celtic mythology, to be honest. I always heard of Greek and Roman myths, even Egyptian ones (which I think this author has some books about too). But Celtic mythology is very interesting, with the elves and trolls.
