Summary

The latest brilliant novel in the D.D. Warren series from Sunday Times and New York Times best seller Lisa Gardner.

'In four days someone is going to kill me....'

At 8pm on 21st January, 28-year-old Charlie Grant believes she is going to be murdered, and she wants Boston's top homicide detective, D.D. Warren, to handle her death investigation.

Confronting D.D. at her latest crime scene, Charlie lays her cards on the table. For each of the last two years, one of her childhood friends has been murdered, leaving Charlie as the only one of three friends to remain alive. But as D.D. delves deeper in to the details of Charlie's case, she begins to question the young woman's story. Because Charlie can now outfight and outrun anyone she meets, and D.D.'s instinct is that she's hiding a secret: a secret so explosive that Charlie herself may turn out to be the biggest danger of all....

'But the son of a bitch has got to catch me first.'

Three narrators? It works

I nearly didn't try this book because I knew that there were three narrators and I expected it to be like a play on radio 4. I'm not desperately keen on slick production techniques on my audio novels you see. But I took a flyer on this one.

If I am honest, the prologue did catch me at a difficult time and I had to listen to it twice. Then maybe the next half an hour went past me a bit but that's probably me and not the story. Stick with it if it isn't me.

Thereafter though, I was hooked. I highly recommend this if you like a good mystery and you like to be caught out with your personal guessing.

Three main characters are all individually voiced but don't be put off by that because they get whole chapters and it is not a radio play type of production. Three well spoken American accents and you get used to them very quickly. There are a couple of phone conversations featuring more than one voice but no more than that. Actually, as soon as you hear the voice at the beginning of each chapter you settle straight back into the story that character is telling you. It works.

I will be checking out more of this lady author. When a lady turns her hand to writing about crime it makes me nervous about being one. What on earth is hiding in our dark recesses?

Most important though, I have got to tell you this bit.. this story focuses partly, but not mostly, on the subject of child-grooming on the internet and is clearly well researched. I consider myself to be fairly savvy but had no idea about how that works and am shocked. If you have children between about 5 and 16 who use the web or would like to, then you must listen to this book and get yourself informed.

A chance encounter with a good one. Yes.

Good thriller!

Another great book from Lisa Gardner. The story was fast paced and kept me interested throughout. A nice easy weekend listen that won't win any literary prizes, but was well written and beautifully read. The three narrators worked well for the story and didn't distract. I recommend this author and this book. More please.

Perfectly Executed

I have read most of Lisa Gardeners Books in the DD Warren series and loved the way she writes her stories, swapping from one character to another in each chapter. By having three narrators, it has made following along much easier and it works really well. The story itself has twists and turns and has you guessing right until the end. My only hope is that the rest of her books become available on Audio as I can no longer read these great stories.

Really good!

It takes a lot to engage me in a book (think I'm slightly ADD!) but this one did it!

Couldn't figure out what was going to happen, wanted to know - held me right til the end.

Great narration too -- my first in this series but about to go find another!

Questions raised. Questions answered!

Good story with unexpected twists. Narration excellent but too quiet in places when listening in the car. Suitable satisfying conclusion!

Not bad takes a while to warm up

Would you try another book written by Lisa Gardner or narrated by the narrators?

Most probably

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The book takes a while to warm up & on more than one occasion I was going to give up but book got better towards the end, so I suppose the author needs to reve up the beginning of book

What three words best describe the narrators’s performance?

Satisfactory needs more passion

If this book were a film would you go see it?

.?
