A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Summary
A cottage on the coast on a windy evening. Under a pool of yellow light, two figures face each other across a kitchen table. A man and a cat. The story about to be related is so unusual yet so terrifyingly plausible that it demands to be told in a single sitting. The man clears his throat, and leans forward, expectant. 'Shall we begin?' says the cat….

Unusually gripping
I would like to say this whole story is the most peculiar and I would congratulate Lynne Truss on the genious of her imagination. I could not really tell from reading the initial introduction of this book what the whole content would be and yet it was funny, sad, hideous in some places, (especially the description of the library room), and I would say that although the story initially, for me, appeared to be a lighthearted story about a speaking cat, is a very sinister and dark murder that you know would just make a great television film. Mike Grady narrates the book well and is clear and easy on the ear. Cat Out of Hell is a brilliant title and just about describes the book perfectly, however, I did not really take it as seriously as the content of the book is. This book is not for pussycats, but I would highly recommend it if you are looking for something dark and satanic.

It’s the tabbies you need to watch.......
As an avid cat lover I was mesmerised by this dark and humourous tale of demonic cats and sinister librarians. Lynne Truss perfectly captures the absolute hold these pesky creatures have over us hapless souls and the fact that no matter what devilment they get up to, they always manage to enchant us with their un-worldly beauty and absolute self-assurance. Of course another great feature of cats is that they are very funny, and so too is this book. I particularly adored the main character who when confronted with a terrifying denouement wishes for nothing more than a sausage sandwich. It is rare that I would rate the narrator as being of equal importance as the author of the tale but in this case Mike Grady is the absolute embodiment of all the fantastic characters in this book. This is 100% recommended for all cat and non-cat lovers who enjoy a bit of eccentric British humour spiced up with some genuine chills.

Wiggy, Roger & The Captain
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would strongly recommend this book as I became very quickly immersed in the strange story of talking cats and the 'true' theory of the nine lives. I don't want to give too much away but it is equally as strange as it is dark.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cat Out of Hell?
When we are first introduced to the Captain and his evil ways of trying to find the one worthy colleague. Roger will soon become your favourite but the brutal beginnings with the captain were brilliant.
Which character – as performed by Mike Grady – was your favourite?
Roger without a doubt, as a cat owner I can well imagine and sometimes swear I can see my cat having the same or similar thoughts. The narration is brilliant from Mike Grady very distinct characterisation with plenty of malice.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
What you always suspected but never wanted to be true about your feline friends!
Any additional comments?
Please Lynne Truss give us more Cats from Hell.

Fun
Despite some of the darker material explored in this book I would describe this story as fun, Mike Grady does some wonderful voices ranging from the hapless Wiggy to the delightful Roger (my favourite). The story is well rounded and nicely resolved if a little daft but that only adds to its charm.

An unexpected pleasure!
I hadn't read anything by Lynne Truss before - I'd been rather wary of her as I wasn't that impressed by the excerpts I had read of her (in)famous grammar book. I found myself with an hour to fill and a generous free sample of 'The Cat out of Hell' that fitted the time available perfectly... and it hooked me totally! I hastily bought the rest of the book and enjoyed it enormously.
The narration is wonderful, especially the voice of Roger the cat. Recommended listen, especially for cat-lovers!

Brilliant! Imagine if Edgar Allan Poe wrote comedy...
I loved this book. It was so refreshing to listen to something unlike anything else I've read. I really wasn't sure if I'd like it but decided to give it a go. I'm so very glad I did. It was read perfectly. Just the right narrator for this book. The quality of the narration was excellent. It was read effortlessly with stunning characterisation and great humour. When I discovered today that the sequel is on audible I bought it immediately. Thank you so much to the author, narrator and all involved in production, for a highly entertaining few hours.

Interesting and enjoyable
What did you like most about Cat Out of Hell?
I liked the fact I didn't know what was going on for quite some time. I have listened to it a couple of times now, and really enjoyed the characters and the plot.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Roger because deep down he wanted to do the right thing.
What does Mike Grady bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He was able to give each of the characters their own personality and I got the feeling he enjoyed reading it too.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the two cats went down the well together.
Any additional comments?
I like Lynn Truss and admire her writing very much. She seems able to deliver different styles easily, and her books are always enjoyable.

Just so unique, well told, and about cats. What else could you want?
The narration was fantastic. I've read some reviews that didn't like the first part. I'm not sure why. For me, it was so refreshing to find a story line that's so off the beaten path and the characters (feline or otherwise) were great. I see there is another in the series that I plan to start right away!

Purr-fectly Middle
I was first drawn to the story because of the author's extremely famous Eats, Shoots & Leaves, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Cat Out of Hell is definitely an odd, unexpected journey with some humorous moments, but not driven by humor as I was expecting.
This story wasn't bad exactly, but it took a bit for me to get into it; I found the beginning with Wiggy slow and preferred when the story switched to Alec. Honestly, I get the feeling that the humor is a bit too British for my American understanding. Of course that is really not the writer's fault since she's British.

Nice writing, but confusing and disturbing
I am generally a fan of Lynne Truss and of cats so thought I'd give this a try. I guess I should have paid more attention to see that it listed under "Horror" subsection of literature. It didn't sound so bad from the description, but turned out to be horrific indeed and not to my taste. I guess I can't blame Truss for wanting to do something a bit different, but I will be more careful to read the fine print next time!

Not quite my thing
Well. This was odd. I like Lynne's writing (loved ES&L). I don't like horror. At all. I like humour, but not mixed with horror. I think this is a crossover between horror and humour. But weird horror. I'm not really much of a cat fan, although we have 2 cats, but I'm a huge rabbit fan, so that didn't work out well for this book in particular.
In general, I liked Alec and Wiggy, although I found Alec's mood to be oddly buoyant for someone who had so recently lost his wife in odd circumstances. I loved Watson. I also liked Winterton. Anyway, it was a vaguely amusing listen, with some cheeky Brit-style humour, which I usually love, but it was also a bit gory and grim and dark.
Excellent narration though.
I bought the next book, Lunar Cats, in paperback, having assumed I would love this one. I guess I will still read it. We'll see. So, just not my cup of tea, or saucer of milk, but obviously some people loved it, so you never know, maybe it will be just your thing.
