Summary

Cambridge is sweltering during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet--"lost" on the left, "found" on the right--and the two never seem to balance. Jackson has never felt at home in Cambridge and has a failed marriage to prove it.

Surrounded by death, intrigue, and misfortune, his own life haunted by a family tragedy, he attempts to unravel three disparate case histories and begins to realise that in spite of apparent diversity, everything is connected...

A cracked mirror of English society

A pretty sharp caricature and satire of late 20C S. England. Bravo to the reader.

Not what I expected

Very enjoyable. fantastic performance by SJ. I found this book in a book swap library on Madeira and was attracted by its connection to Cambridge (where I live). but was totally embedded by the story line especially how it took place in heat waves.

Another winner from Kate Atkinson

Another very enjoyable novel by Kate Atkinson. I loved the way this entwined several story strands into an intriguing whole.. Wonderful narration from Susan Jameson as well/

Genius storyteller

Kate Atkinson is an amazing storyteller, intertwining stories with ease. Narration too plummy, slightly irritating.

Book excellent, performance poor

Reader couldn't be bothered to find out how to pronounce Niamh. Is it really so difficult?

Bit of a plod.

Too much human interest and not enough plot for me. I found the time shifting and different characters point of view difficult to follow. Perhaps in the printed book this is clearer. I won’t be buying any more as definitely not for me.

Well crafted tale

Written in a clever, seemingly matter of fact way which makes you want to know what really happened to the various characters.

Pretty good but found it hard to get into

Struggled to follow for the first few chapters, partly the amount of characters and stories and skipping around in time, would have probably been easier to read. However once I got my head round who was who I enjoyed the story and got really into the mystery and finished it quickly. Not groundbreaking but was entertaining and will dip into the rest of the series when I fancy something a bit light but that also keeps you intrigued .
