Summary

Winner of the 2016 Audie Mystery Award

Now a major BBC drama as part of the Cormoran Strike series.

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past whom he thinks could be responsible - and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.

With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them....

A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, Career of Evil is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. You will not be able to switch this audiobook off.

Another stunner!

Another brilliant adventure for Strike and Robin. The characterisation just gets more interesting and intriguing as we learn a little more about their past lives!
Please hurry and write the next!!!

Cormoran Strike's third outing is best yet

Where does Career of Evil rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Private detective Cormoran Strike faces a new and deeply personal case in the third instalment of JK Rowling (writing as Robert Galbraith)'s series. And it's the best yet.
Strike's assistant Robyn receives the lower leg of a murder victim in the post and it becomes quickly apparent that someone with a grudge against Strike is responsible.
The grisly find forces Strike to examine unsavoury characters he has come across in the past in an attempt to track down the killer.
Meanwhile, Robyn's relationship with her fiance becomes increasingly strained.
The writing is, as always, excellent, and the plot gripping. Roll on the next one!
The narrator is once again Robert Glenister and he does a fine job. I paricularly like the way he voices female characters. Too often male narrators put on a silly high voice when voices female characters but Glenister doesn't fall into this trap. My only slight gripe is the Strike's accent which I feel is slightly Inspector Wexford.

Excellent crime read, expertly performed

I've read both previous Robert Galbraith novels and enjoyed them hugely. I think this might be the best yet. The story of Robin, her fiancee and her relationship with Cormoron develops further in this novel in a refreshingly different way, against the backdrop of a twisted crime puzzler. All expertly handled by Robert Glenister. More please.

My favourite so far!

Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. The plot was fantastic. The threading narrative of three such believable suspects must have taken a lot of skill to leave it so ambiguous for so long. The reveal tied up the loose ends brilliantly. Great seeing the character development, especially Robin. Something that always strikes me in JK Rowling's writing is the intimacy and clarity with which she captures the inner felt sense of emotion of her characters. She must have a very shrewd sense of people's internal worlds to write these aspects so convincingly. And the handling of Robin's revelation with the very real & lasting impact it has had for her speaks to many women in vulnerabilities they feel on a daily basis through no fault of their own. I felt this added depth & richness, despite the fact I'm not typically a fan of more political/feminist elements in fiction (although that's maybe because I've often seen it detailed too bluntly, as if the whole novel was just an excuse to make a political point; that was definitely not the case here).

Glenister was again brilliant in his narration. The character voices are excellent, clearly differentiable and he handled some tricky accents admirably.

This has been my favourite of the series so far.

Chilling subject matter

Would you listen to Career of Evil again? Why?

I probably would listen to it again. It shocked me at first that there are people as peverted as some of the characters in the book so I let that overtake my sentiments. However, as usual JK Rowling doesn't dissappoint. The characters are great with some good twists and turns. It's a rewarding book to listen to.

What other book might you compare Career of Evil to, and why?

It's similar to some of the Lee Child books, partly because the two central characters Cormorant Strike and Jack Reacher are both former military police. So the way they go about analysing crimes is similar. They are also both strong characters that make you want to stick with the story even if it's a bit spine chilling at the time.

What about Robert Glenister’s performance did you like?

He's wonderful at creating the character's voices - very easy to listen to.

Any additional comments?

Well worth the listen
