Summary

This Mother's Day...you will call her Mummy....

Glamorous, beautiful Mummy has everything a woman could want...except for a little daughter of her very own. So when she sees Kim - heavily pregnant, glued to her phone and ignoring her eldest child in a busy shop - she does what anyone would do. She takes her. But little foul-mouthed Tonya is not the daughter that Mummy was hoping for: disobedient, uncooperative and always asking about the funny smell coming from the cellar.

Meanwhile Kim is demonised by the media as a 'scummy mummy', who deserved to lose Tonya and ought to have her other children taken too. Haunted by memories of her abusive childhood, and refusing to play by the media's rules, she begins to spiral, turning on those who love her.

Though they are worlds apart, Mummy and Kim have more in common than they could possibly imagine. But it is five-year-old Tonya who is caught in the middle....

Gripping

This book started great, I didn't like the character mummy. I don't think we are meant to so that's no big deal.
glad I listened to this and not tried to read the book as I think I would have struggled with all the jumping between characters.
I couldn't help but feel that the end was quite rushed. I don't like when lose ends are left and not felt with.

Parts of this story were fantastic and some were too obvious and a bit annoying. Having said that I had to stay up until 1am last night to find out what happened to Tonya so the book kept my interest.

Returned it

There didn't seem to be any plot development. I listened to 6 hours of it and nothing happened to progress the story at all. The narrator does her best but the book is mind numbingly boring.

Too many curse words!!

I enjoyed this story, it was very compelling and not the usual cheesy, predictable storyline a lot of author’s seem to be dishing out these days, the narrator is fantastic but my only complaint is the cursing, it’s unnecessary! I’m no prude in fact far from it but every other word was f**k (much to the amusement of my six year old) if you do purchase listen with headphones, unfortunately this is not an option for myself. I understand the character was portrayed as someone who curses a lot but a few times would have sufficed, I would have got the picture but every other word is not necessary it was becoming irritating.

Couldn’t stop listening

This book had me gripped until the very end. It also has a lot of scope for a sequel, I can’t wait!

Captivating, well thought through

My 1st audio book! I bought it after seeing ‘Lorraine’ interview Tina Baker recently.
It has been pure escapism, lots of twists & turns, brilliantly portrayed through the narrator who executes the characters so well.
I listened over 4 days & found myself staying up until the early hours listening! I couldn’t put it down.
I could see all the scenes in my head; where the characters lived, what they looked like & what their houses/surroundings looked like.
Covered many topics; abuse, eating/health disorders/cultural/society issues.
Would make a great on screen drama.
Well done Tina-I will be looking out for more of your books!!

Never write reviews but this book had me gripped !

Characterisation was just amazing , I was sucked into the story from the get go . Couldn’t put it down and was listening into the early hours I just had to know what happened . Recommend to my mum who also read it in two days . Can’t wait for the next book by this author .

Troubling

Not an easy listen. Distressing, troubling and disturbing. Not a good book for lockdown. Leaves you feeling distraught and upset.
