The Roman Empire up to Constantine

This is a difficult period to cover in 1 book. I found it was lacking details particularly on military aspects esp Caesar in Gaul, Pompey and the campaigns in the East. However it is very strong on "life" in the Roman Empire including economic issues, science, poetry, literature and philosophy. I think it should have been longer with a bit more focus on military aspects and issues on the crisis of the 3rd century

Great listen

Masterful narration of history beautifully dressed up in the guise of witty storytelling, though not without a modern historian's biases and subtle judgements. it demonstrates how much of modern Western culture has its roots in Rome. The book covers several centuries and comes together like a great tapestry. That being said, the depth seems to wane as the reader approaches the end.
