Summary

Would you like to leave your job and make a living with your writing? This book will show you how.

I spent 13 years working as a cubicle slave in the corporate world. I was miserable in my job and my creativity was stunted by the crushing daily grind. Then I started writing books and blogging, using my words to create products and attract readers.

In September 2011, I left my corporate job to become a full-time author and creative entrepreneur and since then I've grown my business year by year, all based on my writing. More importantly, I'm finally living the happy life I always wanted.

I'm not a Kindle or blogging millionaire and this is not a get rich quick scheme. But I will share with you how I make a multi-six-figure income from writing books, blogging and marketing in an ethical manner. We're living in the best time ever to make a living with your writing!

A lot of honest advice

I found Joanna Penn through one of the creative entrepreneur coaches I trust the most, Marc McGuinness. I'd listened to a podcast where he interviewed her and I thought "Oh she sounds like she's won't b s you" I liked her style and felt the info she gave was straight up and not trying to oversell you some formula. So I went and checked out her website and found good solid blog posts and videos on there too.
By the time I listened to this book, I'd listened to quite a few of the 'great' ones out there on writing and some I liked a lot more than others. Too often though, much of the content was slick marketing style stuff that left you still wondering how YOU would achieve your goals. Joanna's book isn't like that - it's a comfy mix of information and personal story that gives you solid suggestions of actions to take, software to use and so on and she doesn't pretend things will happen like magic. She's encouraging and offers sincere advice, ideas and info.
I'd say if you're looking for a good book to get you going, (and one that doesn't break the bank too!) you'll be happy with this buy. I am currently listening for the third time and that is a rare thing for me to do, possibly the first time I've done this.

Good for ebook

This book is full of useful information. I’m sure it would be excellent as an ebook but for an audible, not so much. Every couple of minutes it follows the same pattern, you can find more information on my blog at dah dah dah dot com backslash dah dah dah. Because if the information and the manner it which it is presented, both from the reader and writer I do recommend this book, it’s a quick listen just be prepared for the constant stream of urls coming your way.

Penn-nominal! Thank you! 😀

Between the awesome accent and the excellent author advice, this book is a slam dunk.

Info without the fluff

Joanne Penn was able to convey what authors need to get started on their journey to success in an easy and understandable way. I can see why she is such a pillar in the independent author community.

Great info!

So many authors offer just an overview with no meat on the bones - not the case here. Lots of 'first steps', 'next steps' - a very informative listen !!

An awesome wrap of information

I really like Joanna penn! She’s fantastic and her warm and friendly demeanor is palpable through the content. I think she has some great info and I’m glad I picked this up. Also she’s inspiring and I’m glad she touched on writers fears and the act of keep writing.

More of what to do please

Most of the authors can’t seem to help talking about themselves & take FOREVER to get to the actual “how to”.

Practical Guidance for Those Considering Authoring

What an awesome audio-book! Easy to read with tons of practical information. And the length is perfect. In 2.5 hours, Joanna tells you all the ins and outs of publishing a book and making a living with your writing. She covers traditional publishing and self-publishing as well as podcasting, blogging, and other avenues. And, she gives you a lot of additional tips and tricks that many other authors have missed sharing. One of my favorite tips was when she said "consider writing a short book or a series of shorter books (i.e. 40,000 words or less)." This blew my mind! Here I was thinking I needed to write at least 100,000 words for my first book, but the idea of writing three smaller guides and then ultimately combining them into one work takes my one product and breaks it into four potential income streams. I will most likely go back and listen to this again to make sure I write down all of the important guidance she offers. Definitely pick up this audio book if you're considering writing and the ways you can scale your writing for sale.

Delivers what it promises.

This book does exactly what it says--it talks about ways to make a living with your writing. There is a lot of information, and it gave me a lot of ideas. The author does sell a variety of books and course, and she does mention them, but I didn't feel like she focused on pushing her products. I will be looking at some of her other books. The narrator was good. She was pleasant to listen to and kept my attention.
