Summary

Since rising out of the New York City streets over 25 years ago, Russell Simmons has helped create such ground breaking ventures as Def Jam Records, Phat Farm, and Def Comedy Jam, in the process becoming known the world over as "The CEO of Hip Hop".

Russell might have helped introduce hip-hop to the world, but he credits his success to his belief in a strong set of principles, or laws, which he shares for the first time in this audio. In 12 steps, Russell reveals a path towards success that can be followed not only by those looking to duplicate his professional success, but by anyone struggling to realize a dream.

Those looking solely for advice on how to build up a bank account at the expense of personal integrity should probably look elsewhere. That's because these laws stem from the belief that all success, be it professional or personal, comes from a connection with your higher self. Using examples from his own experiences and observations, Russell demonstrates how tapping into that connection will allow you to get your mind right, find the motivation to start instead of stall, surround yourself with the right people, appreciate the power of hard work, and understand the power of karma.

But most importantly, this book will demonstrate how it's impossible to receive any sort of lasting success from the world without giving something of lasting value to the world first. That's a practice that is reflected in Russell's own work as a mentor and philanthropist and one that he promotes as fundamental to empowerment and success on every level.

Blending business insight, universal spiritual truths, and an inspired sense of purpose, Do You! crosses the lines of age, race, and background with wisdom that will lift you up and motivate you to pursue your vision.

Critic reviews

"I consider him one of the great entrepreneurs out there today. Russell knows the market and he sees the future, and that's the ultimate businessperson." (Donald Trump)
"Russell Simmons, the original and eternal Hip-Hop Mogul, is one of the most innovative and influential figures in modern American business and culture." ( The New York Times)
"Simmons is the Godfather. Def Jam was the model that birthed Bad Boy, No Limit, Roc-A-Fella, and all these other labels. And then later, Phat Farm birthed Sean Jean, Rocawear, MarcJacobs, and all these other clothing companies. Russell is the architect of what we do." (Jay-Z)

Yeah that's right I'm doin' me

Excellent positive resource that I will refer back to in times I stray from my path in life.

At times a little one dimensional and occasionally descends into social commentary but full of fantastic advice, especially related to the power of meditation and yoga which I will explore further

Remarkable story and an inspiration for all.

Would you listen to Do You! again? Why?

Generic self help and motivational wisdom from one that really has.
This does not feel like a book written by someone generating wealth by repackaging a selling old ideas. A fresh motivating presentation.

What about Black Ice’s performance did you like?

Clear and motivating voice. Not at all patronising like some books of this type

Excellent Conversation!

As an entrepreneur, I greatly appreciated the realness and candor of what Mr. Simmons was telling me in his book. This book is a refreshing change from many self-help books in which the authors are afraid to be open and honest about their failures and faults.

The #1 book of the year

Dear Russell, few books I read that give the msg so clear, I am brasilian and I understand very well what is to have a dream, I wish I could translate your book and give for free for all those brasilian kids that feel right now lost just like I was im my past. You wrote the #1 book and Hill Harper wrote the #2 but not less important... thank you all. Sorry for my write mistakes, really I think you dont care...

No One Category

Even though some will be put off by the curse words sprinkled more heavily in some places in this book than others, it is a must listen to. The reader is good, even though Russell reading it himself would have been better. The book is hard to categorize and this is one of its strengths. Mr. Simmons manages to include interesting biographical information, write an important, but brief piece of American history, write a spiritual book and write an extremely motivational book all in one, easy flow, word composition. It is really a must-hear for every American. Russell Simmons uses the N-word a couple times. I look forward to the time when he gets to the place in his personal evolution to have no further need to use this word or any other of those violent words. I have full confidence that he will get to that place. His personal meteoric rise thus far has been enough to amaze anyone who is really listening.

Inspire your nephew or niece.

I thought this book was good, but I would probably recommend it more for a younger audience. It's a good way to get success principles early in life. It's refreshing to get such an inspiring message from the Hip Hop culture.

Truth be told...

This audiobook is amazing. I already agree with Russell on several things, like vegetarianism, yoga, truth, etc. But the book also introduced me to several new concepts that has already been useful for me. In fact, my psychologist remarked I was much more focused and targetted now. Which is great. Get this audiobook, and spit some truth;-)

This book was just what I needed!

Russell Simmons has always represented authenticity and truth. I'm listening again for clarity. My favorite line in the book is "Financial literacy, economic empowerment and wealth building are the last leg of the Civil Rights Movement!

I’m a fan of Russell Simmons books

I’ve actually read two other books of his , this was the first one I’ve listened to. I identify with his mentality , being that I grew up in the hip hop culture . Some of these things are basic principles , but there are a few practices I will be adding or have recently added in my day to day life and have seen results . I’d recommend this book , to people trying to refine routines or behaviors , especially people trying to refine their approach and perspective when dealing with other people.

Love Russell Simmons!

I love that Russell is a yogi, and a vegan and is working so hard to inspire other to do better! This is my second book by him, and it was definitely worth my time! I also enjoyed that he has black ice narrate this!
