About this listen

It was one kiss and a promise of tomorrow…

WEST

Loving Jackson Myles almost cost me my life. I ran, going wherever the wind took me. I did things I’m not proud of to survive.

When I inherit my half of Double Arrow Ranch, I mean to sell. I want nothing to do with Jackson or that place. But my dad’s will requires I work the ranch for one year or I’ll forfeit the sale.

Only Jackson isn’t some soft and sweet kid anymore. He’s hard edges and rough antics, and he takes nothing from no one—including me. As I start to unravel, dragged down by the memories of Double Arrow Ranch, Jackson is there to pick up my pieces. But do I want him to?

JACKSON

I loved West McNamara. I loved him when he kissed me, I loved him when he vanished in the middle of the night, and a part of me still loves him. But I hate him for all the same reasons.

When West inherits his half of Double Arrow Ranch, he can’t sell it without working the ranch for one year. That means I’m stuck with him.

But this West isn’t the kid I knew. He’s tortured and broken, tattooed with the secrets of seventeen years lost between us. As I learn his secrets, can I reconcile the best friend I lost with the broken man in front of me?

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it sat in my library for a while before I finally gave it a go. It blew me away. The author strikes the perfect balance between difficult, hard-hitting themes and the kind of tear-inducing angst that’s softened by humour and quirky behaviours you can’t help but remember—and love—in the characters.

I’ll confess: from the middle to the end, I grew a little impatient and found myself shouting at the characters. But because the story deals with alcoholism and PTSD, the self-destructive and repetitive behaviours felt very realistic. The conclusion was beautifully—and unusually—executed, especially considering how often book endings can disappoint.

The audiobook is very well performed by both narrators. One voice is a little deep and harder to hear in the car, but it has a lovely timbre nonetheless. This is a book I’ll remember long after others fade, and one I’ll definitely return to in the future.

One of the best books I've listen to in a while

Poor audio. The MC whispers and shouts in every sentence, making it impossible to listen to the book properly.
