Summary

The only thing that matters to me is rescuing my sister from the drug-cooking cult that once enslaved us both. I’ve run cons my whole life, and I’ll use my body to get whatever I need. Max Daniels is the last connection I have to that world, the one person reckless enough to get involved. Besides, now that his brothers have turned on him, he needs me too.

The deal was supposed to be simple: a place to hide in exchange for rescuing my sister. Now he’s my prisoner. Totally at my mercy. But I’m the one captivated. Enthralled. Doing everything he asks of me until I’m not sure who’s in control.

We both crave the heat. The more it hurts, the better. But what if Max wants a different life now, to leave the game...to love me? I thought I knew better than to get burned. Now I’m in too deep to pull away. And the crazy thing is...I don’t want to.

"Hurtingly Hot" ...

I totally rooted for Joan... She really had a crappy start, leading to a twisted view of life. A "hard to get to" happily ever after, but a story of love and family which will warm the coldest heart.

Not overly "biker" for someone dipping their toe into a biker world...

I really enjoyed not knowing where this book was going to take me. I sure was taken on a journey with these two characters and left feeling all was good in the world when the book ended... Just what I like...

Top notch narration to boot!

A very intriguing and unexpected book

It was a very intriguing and unexpected book. Scorching hot too, also in an unusual way. There was no universal truth that you take with you at the end, but the characters and their arcs were so compelling.

How often do we get a female bisexual sex worker as a lead character? Not often enough in my opinion. Olivia–sorry, Joan–is a survivor, making do with the lemons life served her. A series of tragedies and bad decisions brought her and her younger sister in contact with a drug dealing cult and its crazy leader. She managed to escape, but at the beginning of the book, she’s devised a plan to free her sister too, which goes sideways quickly. She ends up with a wounded MC president on her hands, her last resort to help her sister.

Max’s life is on the turn. His role as a MC president is challenged, he’s trying to escape the life. Until Olivia/Joan decides he’s her only chance to save her sister, and he becomes her prisoner.

The dynamic between them was explosive. They play power games–the one in handcuffs on the bed isn’t always the weak one–and torture can be physical or psychological. Words are often as powerful as fists in their relationship. It was intense, and center of the sun hot.

Though I understand the delay in Olivia’s plan–with Max injured, and Olivia needing help–I felt the pause in the plot was a bit too long. Sure, it’s the whole point of the story: they discover each other, they need to cooperate, and there’s the fake relationship aspect. Anything to let them develop feelings for each other. Despite the constant reminder that Olivia needs to save her sister–it’s an important trait of her personality–it seemed at times that we lost the plot. Making the ending feel rushed too.

The narration was quite good. Both narrators were perfectly cast. Olivia’s strength and vulnerability both transpired from the female narrator’s voice, and the male narrator gave Max a subtle coldness that fit. So though the suspense element wasn’t the best, I really enjoyed the characters, their backstory, and how they connected with each other.
