Story
Thaddeus Murfee is 25, single, a lawyer of 18 months, and completely unprepared for the murder case that walks in. While Ermeline was passed out, her date carved his name in her breasts. Heavy, thick letters: V-I-C-T-O-R. The guilty party is found murdered. Or was he guilty? Ermeline is arrested because she had motive and opportunity. She hires Thaddeus, who makes his debut defending his first murder case in this courtroom drama.
Summary
To defend her client, she must dig up a town’s darkest secrets.
Defense attorney Cass Leary thought she’d escaped her hometown for good. But after leaving her high-paying job in Chicago, she decides to revisit her troubled past. When someone murders the beloved high school basketball coach and Cass steps in to defend the girl accused of the crime, she doesn’t expect the death threats that follow....
Confronting the town that shunned her as a child, she unearths secrets that some would kill to keep buried. And after her client confesses to the crime, Cass detects a widespread cover-up. If she doesn’t get to the bottom of it soon, the next fatalities may be the ones she loves....
Burden of Truth is the first book in series of high-stakes legal thrillers. If you like blood-pumping action, compelling characters, and twisted crime conspiracies, then you’ll love Robin James’s dark tale.

Burden of Truth
Ignore the negative reviews because BURDEN OF TRUTH is an outstanding legal thriller with excellent narration. It is Book 1 in the Cass Leary Legal Thriller Series by attorney Robin James. The novel is dark and the topic of a high school coach taking advantage of and raping a long series of high school girls over almost two decades is unpleasant.
This is my second legal thriller by Robin James. The first was Time of Justice which is the first novel in her newer Mara Brent Legal Thriller series. Robin James is a very talented writer.

Narration almost killed it.
Right from the start, I didn't care for the voice of the narrator, but decided to give it a chance. It was a long drive and we needed a book... Narrator's voice of the 19-year-old accused is downright horrible. She sounds like an 8-year-old, make that an 8-year-old with an annoying voice. As for the story, the author should have listened to the book before finalizing the draft. If she had, she would have certainly noticed the unnecessary and repetitive use of "messenger bag" when talking about Cassi's briefcase. That is not the only repetitive use of descriptive words. You'll hear them... Not terrible, but too blatant for me. The storyline was pretty good even though easy to figure out. Just like so many audiobooks, it seems like the last 1-2 hours just drag on. Bumping it up to 1.25 speed was torturous with the voices.

Narration was robotic
The story seemed intriguing, but I couldn't continue with the narration. The narration was so robotic, I kept thinking I was listening to my Alexa reading to me and not to a narrator. I tried, because I the story had me interested, but I had to give up because of the narration.

I don't write reviews.....
I don't write reviews. Rate..... yes. Review.... no. I read and listen to way too many to write a review unless the book is spectacular. The story and the characters were believable and very likeable. All aspects of Burden of Truth were spectacular. I don't believe I've read anything else by this author but I will be reading the rest of this series.
By writing this review, I am recommending this book. Highly recommending this book. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Recommended!

Absolute Joke. YA law fantasy.
I read the first two of this author’s other series. Eventually it annoyed me so much I stopped. I thought maybe this one would be better. Boy was I wrong. It’s fantastical nonsense- combined with a terrible annoying narrator. It’s not an adult book. This is just bad YA in the guise of “legal suspense”.

Couldn't finish, could barely start
The voices the narrator uses were so distracting I finally gave up, awful. One of main characters, the accused is such a moron, she's the only thing worse than the awful voices. The story might be an interesting one, can't say because I couldn't get far enough into it to see.
