Summary

The story of the Warner Brothers studio is the story of the American dream - an immigrant family who escaped a violent beginning, and arrived penniless in America, only to conquer its newest and most lucrative art form. The Warner formula was simple - to thrill audiences with stories torn straight from the headlines, and as such, Warner Studios became the home of the crime film.

Some of the most incredible stories of the twentieth century were born in the mafia, from the shadowy machinations of Al Capone and his war on Chicago's North Side Gang, to the macabre tale of "Il Diavolo" and his juvenile henchmen....

In Bullets And Blood, hear the tale of the crime movie in the twentieth century, the incredible story of the Warner family and those they loved, and of James Cagney, the iron-willed redhead from the belly of New York, who would go on to become their biggest star.

Incredible. Storytelling At It’s Finest.

This entire piece quite literally brought me to tears by the end of it. Roche’s incredible ability to tell a story that spanned a century brought each and every Hollywood bonafide legend to life, experiencing the highs and the lows of their lives along with them.

The detail that the author went to is astounding and links each episode with perfection. The delivery had me laughing, cheering and crying and even made me think about my own siblings and our relationship, I found myself wondering if it’d be the same types of dynamics and attitudes.

There are a host of forgotten names of Hollywood that are brought to life also, and now, certainly within my own mind, will never be forgotten. There is even the odd dictator and the incredible stands that were taken against him.

Honestly, if you are a fan of old Hollywood and it’s myths and legend (and even if you are not) get this series.

I sincerely hope this will one day be found and commissioned into a TV series that would truly link Movies, TV & Radio of which is the very backdrop of this story.

Thank you Adam for creating something so remarkable that brings back to life the incredible Golden Age of Hollywood.

Seriously Brilliant!!!

I only just recently learned that Adam Roche creates these amazing Hollywood histories on podcast - for free!

When you listen to any one of his audible books you will agree with me that this guy should be creating shows on TV.

I love history and science programs on TV, and on audio, no matter the subject matter. However, I often notice that historians and scientists (Bethany Hughes and Brian Cox being 2 examples) are chosen more for their presentation skills rather than their knowledge of the subject matter (no offence to either).

When it comes to old Hollywood, Adam Roche is an expert at both.

Roche's voice, and obvious love for what he is discussing matched by his depth of knowledge on the subject matter, makes his books not just entertaining but highly engaging and informative.

I actually got his audio as a free download from Audible and while listening to it I keep thinking to myself, "OMG I can't believe this was free".

I don't know who Adam Roche is, bar the fact that he is obviously English and that he has a podcast which Audible has used to create his audio books, but I do know one thing...he is seriously selling himself short releasing these amazing entertaining and informative audios for free. I have paid for, and been satisfied with, audios that aren't nearly as good as this.

Someone, somewhere, in TV land (and in Audible land for that matter!!) should commission this guy to make an epic Hollywood history series - maybe with each part/book/series covering everything that happened in a specific decade - and unleash it on the public.

I can honestly say, having over 300 paid-for audible titles on my phone, ipod and computer, that 2 of Adam Roche's Audible books make it into my Top 10.

Don't hesitate to give anything this guy produces a listen. If you are even remotely interested in old Hollywood, or how Hollywood became the mega world-influencing phenomenon it is today, then you will enjoy these audios.

I look forward to seeing Netflix, Amazon Prime, Channel 4 or BBC waking up to the potential for this type of stuff for TV and hope that when they do, they have Adam Roche writing and presenting it.

Hollywood brought to life

Brilliantly written and fantastic narration. I've always loved old Hollywood and this book is so interesting to learn how it all began. I almost feel guilty that this is currently free to Audible members! Get it now you won't be disappointed.

Good listen

I am a big film fan. Thoroughly enjoyed the story. It jumped around quite a bit and I think I would have preferred it to be chronological but that didn’t take away the interesting history.

Loved it !

I wasn't sure about a 30 parter. I get bored easily and couldn't see myself getting through it all. However it was a free download and I LOVE Adam Roche and his work so I tried it out. I'm so glad I did because it's a treat.

Adam Roche has his usual delivery style. I know some reviews say he's overdramatic and it's irritating but personally I love it. He's great at injecting humour, pathos and sincerity and I find myself swept into another world so easily. I've not found another narrator that can do this so well.

I didn't know anything about Warner Bros other than Looney Tunes so I found the whole story fascinating. The change from growing up close to their final days was devastating. I particularly loved the James Cagney stories - it's rare to hear a love story as great as his and he himself was a fantastic character.

I'd love to see this made into a movie - it has love, affairs, revenge, backstabbing, childhood stories, brotherhood, amateur boxing, Hitler, the introduction of sound in movies, the move into radio, the trends in cinema, contract law, the casting couch, terrible managerial skills, rape, inequality, familial squabbles, illness and death, humour, sadness and so much more.

I'd recommend this amazing series.

An Epic Tale

An audiobook production every bit as engaging, ambitious and moving as an epic film. If your enthralled by rags to riches tales and the stories of old Hollywood, than this is the one for you. However, this story of a movie studio and its creators embraces more than that. Not only do you find out a lot more about some of the studio's biggest stars, such as James Cagney, this story puts the studio in its historical context. Enjoyed it immensely and was thoroughly gripped.

Loved every second....

I downloaded this because I am cheap and it was free. I had no idea that Warner Brothers & James Cagney would be so endlessly fascinating. Fantastically reasearched, beautifully written and well performed...I honestly loved every single second and felt bereft when it was over. Highly, highly recommended. Thanks, Adam Roche & Audible.
