Summary

The story of the Warner Brothers studio is the story of the American dream - an immigrant family who escaped a violent beginning, and arrived penniless in America, only to conquer its newest and most lucrative art form. The Warner formula was simple - to thrill audiences with stories torn straight from the headlines, and as such, Warner Studios became the home of the crime film.

Some of the most incredible stories of the twentieth century were born in the mafia, from the shadowy machinations of Al Capone and his war on Chicago's North Side Gang, to the macabre tale of "Il Diavolo" and his juvenile henchmen....

In Bullets And Blood, hear the tale of the crime movie in the twentieth century, the incredible story of the Warner family and those they loved, and of James Cagney, the iron-willed redhead from the belly of New York, who would go on to become their biggest star.

As an Audio Show - free for members - when you add Bullets and Blood to your library, you'll get all 30 episodes, with runtimes varying from 25-60 minutes.

Hollywood brought to life

Brilliantly written and fantastic narration. I've always loved old Hollywood and this book is so interesting to learn how it all began. I almost feel guilty that this is currently free to Audible members! Get it now you won't be disappointed.

What an epic!

I often wondered about the beginnings of Hollywood and who the players really were. And then this production arrives.

I was swept into a real world that once existed with the rich storytelling prowess of history and the perfect narration of Adam Roache. His deliberate and silky voice made the telling infectious.

I am so pleased that I followed my heart and chose this. What an epic!

Incredible. Storytelling At It’s Finest.

This entire piece quite literally brought me to tears by the end of it. Roche’s incredible ability to tell a story that spanned a century brought each and every Hollywood bonafide legend to life, experiencing the highs and the lows of their lives along with them.

The detail that the author went to is astounding and links each episode with perfection. The delivery had me laughing, cheering and crying and even made me think about my own siblings and our relationship, I found myself wondering if it’d be the same types of dynamics and attitudes.

There are a host of forgotten names of Hollywood that are brought to life also, and now, certainly within my own mind, will never be forgotten. There is even the odd dictator and the incredible stands that were taken against him.

Honestly, if you are a fan of old Hollywood and it’s myths and legend (and even if you are not) get this series.

I sincerely hope this will one day be found and commissioned into a TV series that would truly link Movies, TV & Radio of which is the very backdrop of this story.

Thank you Adam for creating something so remarkable that brings back to life the incredible Golden Age of Hollywood.

Great value and absorbing

The story of Warner Brothers and their era presented as Greek Tragedy. Another absorbing production by Adam Roche who collects his information and presents it in a very effective manner. The only suggestions I would make would be for him to allow an alternative narrator as I personally find his narration to be rather syrupy and unsuited to the material. It reminds me of Peter Cooks impressions of Joan Crawford an Greta Garbo!
The choice of background music is also often anachronistic and overly sentimental.
I do however appreciate that this is very much a one man band operation and the effort put into the production is tremendous and represents exceptional value for both Audible and it's listeners. Looking forward to more. I must go back and watch more Jimmy Cagney what an amazing man he was!

Brilliant listen

This is not the sort of thing I ordinarily listen to, but I ran out of credits for the month and thought I'd give it a go. I'm so glad I did! It was fascinating and told very well, so interesting to hear about the times of early Hollywood and the people at the centre of it.
I would recommend highly and will be going to take a look at the other books produced by this author.
