Summary

The story of the Warner Brothers studio is the story of the American dream - an immigrant family who escaped a violent beginning, and arrived penniless in America, only to conquer its newest and most lucrative art form. The Warner formula was simple - to thrill audiences with stories torn straight from the headlines, and as such, Warner Studios became the home of the crime film.

Some of the most incredible stories of the twentieth century were born in the mafia, from the shadowy machinations of Al Capone and his war on Chicago's North Side Gang, to the macabre tale of "Il Diavolo" and his juvenile henchmen....

In Bullets And Blood, hear the tale of the crime movie in the twentieth century, the incredible story of the Warner family and those they loved, and of James Cagney, the iron-willed redhead from the belly of New York, who would go on to become their biggest star.

Incredible. Storytelling At It’s Finest.

This entire piece quite literally brought me to tears by the end of it. Roche’s incredible ability to tell a story that spanned a century brought each and every Hollywood bonafide legend to life, experiencing the highs and the lows of their lives along with them.

The detail that the author went to is astounding and links each episode with perfection. The delivery had me laughing, cheering and crying and even made me think about my own siblings and our relationship, I found myself wondering if it’d be the same types of dynamics and attitudes.

There are a host of forgotten names of Hollywood that are brought to life also, and now, certainly within my own mind, will never be forgotten. There is even the odd dictator and the incredible stands that were taken against him.

Honestly, if you are a fan of old Hollywood and it’s myths and legend (and even if you are not) get this series.

I sincerely hope this will one day be found and commissioned into a TV series that would truly link Movies, TV & Radio of which is the very backdrop of this story.

Thank you Adam for creating something so remarkable that brings back to life the incredible Golden Age of Hollywood.

Hollywood brought to life

Brilliantly written and fantastic narration. I've always loved old Hollywood and this book is so interesting to learn how it all began. I almost feel guilty that this is currently free to Audible members! Get it now you won't be disappointed.

fascinating and intriguing

I don't know how many hours total this series is but it was really interesting and inspiring to hear how Warner Bros. came to be a film studio at times I was on the edge of my seat. I feel sad that this Hollywood journey has ended.

The best of story telling

Love the way it is been written and the best part it is been read. A pure performance with witty sound effects. Hats off to the narrator.

Entertaining but easy on the ear...

Entertaining but easy on the ear and informative but im riveting. Kinda' like a softened down Mickey Spillane creation.

I haven't finished the second episode yet, but I ready know I'll recommend this series to friends and family. All of them. Because well, there's something for everyone. Like a clean, but risqué joke with your Nanna'. Or a tap-on-the-side-of-nose private joke with your Grandfather on a topic your parents probably wouldnt encourage should you be under 10yrs old.

The narrator is enthusiastic - and at times skirts on the eager - when reading a particularly juicy situation. Were there crackles and the sound of a needle on a warped 33rpm record, you could be back in the forties. He is good at what he does. The pauses, cadence, flow, tempo and verve are all there. Almost always in the right spot.

I've learned quite a lot already. About the Warner Brothers and now James Cagney. But I've been entertained along the way and looking forward to the rest of the series.

Because finding a decent podcast session isn't easy. Some.... No.! Not some. *Many* aren't of this quality. So if anyone's looking for a good listen about stuff from old Hollywood..? You've found it.

a wonderful listening experience beautifully read.

An interesting story for someone of my generation who grew up watching many of the films on TV.

outstandingly informative

An absolute pleasure to listen to it tells the story of the original movie moguls, some of them were obviously role models for Harvey Weinstein. Intertwined is the life syoty of the true gentleman, James Cagney, and of the actors that changed contract laws for everyone's benefit today.
it is addictive listening, beautifully told with sensitivity and compassion.

Simply wonderful.

I loved this. An incredible story beautifully written. A pleasure to listen to. I thought I already knew much about the early history of Hollywood but I knew next to nothing about the history of the Warner brothers. i didn’t really want it to end. Highly recommended.

One of the greatest stories I've ever heard.

This story took me by surprise. I had no idea about the beginnings of this family, and I mostly picked up the podcast as an actor, interested to hear little things about what the world was like back then. I didn't realized the epic adventure I was in for. This made me laugh, it made me cry and it made me feel anger, but also at times made me happy. There's so much to unpack in this story, but the narration is so perfect that by the end you just feel like you were a part of it all.
