Summary

Twenty-five years ago, Stella Guzzo beat her daughter to death and then walked up the street to play bingo at her church. V. I. Warshawski grew up with the Guzzo family. She dated Frank Guzzo when they were teens and knew Stella's murderous rages firsthand. She didn't think about the family again until the day Frank came to her office, wanting V. I. to help his mother with an exoneration claim. The detective wants no part of Stella Guzzo's world, but she doesn't feel able to say no. V. I.'s inquiries put her smack in the path of a notorious mob enforcer. When she gets jumped in her old hood, her biggest question becomes whether she will live long enough to find the answers.

Really enjoyed this book

I have enjoyed all the books in the series so far. The characterisations are fantastic all the stories keep you you guessing. I think VI is a Woman ahead of her time and it’s good to see a female character with such strength and determination. In consideration, it is my view that the author is amongst the finest writers I have read. The narration by Liza Ross is really excellent and adds much to the enjoyment the audio book series provides

Not the best V.I.W book

I was really looking forward to this book as I have read most of Sara Paretsky's V.I.W series and enjoyed them. Felt that she may have run out of ideas for her P.I. and reverted to the story that many police procedurals and private eye books seem to gravitate to - the personal (his)story of the P.I. The characters, and particularly the talented godchild, I found to be annoying and unlikeable and the narrator seemed to make her even more so. Dredging up long dead cousin Boom Boom up also seemed to indicate lack of new ideas. As I had read most of the previous books in the series in print, I somehow imagined the "voice" of V.I.W differently. Although this is not really a fault, it bothered me. As these stories are more or less chronological, and V.I. is now 50 in this book, I felt that the likeable Mr Contrerus should have by now been written out....Oh well. I would perhaps recommend this book only to people who have not read other books in the series.
