Having not watched the TV series I bought this as a “Deal of the Day” on Audible and am happy to say that it turned out to be a very satisfying book in its own right. A whodunit set in a rural backwater town mostly seen through the eyes of the detectives involved in the case and the local residents of a community traumatised by the murder of a child in its midst. This is a lot about emotions and feelings with a very good set of characters. The plot itself has a number of twists and turns but remains a human story at its core focusing a lot on the families directly involved.

Carolyn Pickles does a decent job of the narration though a few of the characters sounded very similar. The only real word of warning I would give about this one is the very ending of the book. After the big reveal about half an hour is spent on the aftermath possibly showing its TV heritage. It’s a last attempt to tug at the heart strings. If you’re the sort of person that gets irritated by that you might find yourself a little fed up by the time you get to the very end.

For me that was okay, it provides some level of closure. When characters are good like these are then it’s okay to spend just a little more time with them and get some nods as to how some of the issues will work out for them. Some may find it slightly heavy going though and it probably touched on the extremes of what I am happy with.

All in all though a decent read.

Broadly Speaking Pretty Good

Yes it meet my expectations, the struggle of senior investigating officer's health and private life. Excellent narrator across most of the characters.

Having watched the TV production, which was brilliant, it was good to put faces to the characters whilst listening and i found it hard to stop listening. A really, really good story line. I hope the follow up comes out too in audio.

Excellent.

I read this, having visited recently where the series was filmed, which renewed my interest.
Extremely well written novel. Excellent description of setting with convincing characters, sensitively written.
The narrator Carolyn Pickles, performed this novel so well. Her voicing of Ellie's words was very similar to Olivia Coleman's interpretation. Her voices for Joe and Alec were slightly less secure with Scottish and Welsh merging into Dorset twang, but a sensitive performance nonetheless.
