Gripping, terrifying, an unputdownable read. Discover Graham Greene's most iconic novel.

A gang war is raging through the dark underworld of Brighton. Seventeen-year-old Pinkie, malign and ruthless, has killed a man. Believing he can escape retribution, he is unprepared for the courageous, life-embracing Ida Arnold. Greene's gripping thriller exposes a world of loneliness and fear, of life lived on the 'dangerous edge of things.'

In this gripping, terrifying, and unputdownable read, discover Greene's iconic tale of the razor-wielding Pinkie.

'Brighton Rock when I was about thirteen. One of the first lessons I took from it was that a serious novel could be an exciting novel - that the novel of adventure could also be the novel of ideas' Ian McEwan

Brighton Rock is an atmospheric and dark novel, the characters feel like people you might pass in a pub, unaware of their history. At the level of the page I loved this book. The writing and imagery is superb. My main qualm is spending so much time with the central villain, who's malice feels unexplained. This is not a book I'd recommend everyone, but I found it very memorable, particularly its themes of conscience, damnation, and hell. It also has what all my favourite novels have which is a strong sense of place and is immersively read by the narrator.

Story

Sam West made every one of Graham Greene’s words come alive and the story even more frightening than the very familiar film version that starred Richard Attenborough as Pinkie.

Wonderful narration
