Summary

Carmilla, Queen of the Night, is a shape-shifting raven whose fictional exploits thrill girls all over the world. When tweens in Chicago's Carmilla Club hold an initiation ritual in an abandoned cemetery, they stumble on an actual corpse, a man stabbed through the heart in a vampire-style slaying. The girls include daughters of some of Chicago's most powerful families: the grandfather of one, Chaim Salanter, is one of the world's wealthiest men; the mother of another, Sophy Durango, is the Illinois Democratic candidate for Senate.

For V.I. Warshawski, the questions multiply faster than the answers. Is the killing linked to a hostile media campaign against Sophy Durango? Or to Chaim Salanter's childhood in Nazi-occupied Lithuania?

Yet Another Book Full Of Modern Agendas

I did not finish the book. I hate being lectured by authors on ideologies! I read to get away from the modern world. The reading of this book was wholly out of character for VI. Hours and hours of strange, shrill childish voices. The last VI listened to was by Judy Kaye. She understood the character! yet another credit wasted!

"Mopping up messes."

A long time can of VI Warshawski, this is the first of the series I have read for a long time. And whilst the writing did not disappoint, I found the story line not fully believable.
Never mind: it was still enjoyable, twisty and involving.
Read by Liza Ross, whose performance was excellent even if her voice did not fully match with the one in my head, really became V.I. In delivery of the story.
Not the best of the series, perhaps, but still worth reading

Another great story from Sara Paretski

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

With Paretski you always get a full background of all the main characters who are all believeable and, unlike CSI, you get to realise that with most crimes you need a lot of work to uncover the truth. Ignore the fact that Warsowski would almost certainly have been killed in one of her earlier escapades, she seems to have more lives than a cat, and you have a rattling good story.

What about Liza Ross’s performance did you like?

She sounds authentic

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Family matters
