About this listen
Shortlisted for: Popular Non-Fiction Book of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012
Michael Palin journeys to a vast country of unimaginable contrasts - Brazil. An economic powerhouse, it is host to a staggering variety of peoples. He starts his journey in the north, in the remote mountains and forests on the border with Venezuela, and finishes in the south at the legendary Iguaçu Falls. He travels by river-boat, float-plane and foot to visit tribes deep in the jungle, samples life in the agricultural and mining heartland of Brazil, experiences the modernism of Brasília and the heady mix of Rio de Janeiro, and ventures into the favelas. He travels down the northeast coast with its African-inspired culture; to São Luís; Recife and Salvador, where Michael is swept up in Candomblé. He heads to São Paulo, where the super-rich commute by helicopter; tastes German beer served from a motorcycle sidecar, and tries his hand at being a cowboy before journey's end beneath one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.

He reads the book himself, which is a definitely plus. It just wouldn't be the same with a different narrator. Only one complaint - I wish Michael Palin made more of these!
Great service by Audible too! Very pleased with my purchase and service received from Audible.
Brilliant

This is the first time i've listened to a travel book. I always thought that listening to some bloke bang on about how lucky he was to have the opportunity to visit somewhere better than my suburban reality would really tick me off, but Michael Palin just isn't some bloke and Brazil not just some place far away. I was gripped from the two minutes in and stayed gripped throughout.
My wife and I started listening to this book on a ridiculously long car journey and found ourselves delaying getting out of the car when we stopped. Palin comes across as a genuinely nice bloke as you would expect. The real star of this book however, is Brazil.
Not just a wonderfully diverse and important place, Brazil you will discover is an approach to life that seems so refreshing and as my wife said, Palin's delivery unfolds more as the story of Brazil than a trip guide.
This book left us in no doubt that the emergence of Brazil as an important global force could actually be just what we all need.
More than just some bloke on holiday.

What did you like best about this story?
The book highlights some wonderful people along the way which really leave you with an impression of the Brazilian way of life. It highlights the vast area of the country whilst via those encounters demonstrates the significant differences between the various areas. I downloaded the book as I am visiting for the world cup next year and feel I have a much better understanding of Brazilian culture as a result of listening, whilst obviously acknowledging any book attempting to cover such a vast country could only ever hope to really scratch the surface.I did enjoy the way individual encounters are used to give a personality to the regions.
Overall an excellent listen/read.
