Eliza Clark
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema.
The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....
Boy Parts is the incendiary debut novel from Eliza Clark, a pitch-black comedy both shocking and hilarious, fearlessly exploring the taboo regions of sexuality and gender roles in the 21st century.
©2020 Eliza Clark (P)2020 Audible, LtdI can't comment on it as a read, but as a listen it is exceptional. I loved the fact that Eliza Clark was the narrator: who could convey better the emotions and inner confusion of her protagonist, Irina?
For all my enthusiasm, this is probably not a book for everyone; there is swearing throughout and the subject matter involves topics such as extreme sex, rape, violence, abuse, eating disorders and disintegrating mental health. However, if you enjoy in-depth character portrayal and unreliable narrators, with - surprisingly - some laugh-out-loud moments, this may well be the book for you.
I don't want to divulge the plot, but works to which I would compare "Boy Parts" include the novels "Bunny" by Mona Awad Ottessa Moshfegh's superb "Eileen" or perhaps the play "Iphigenia in Splott" by Gary Owen - though the latter is not so dark.
Dark, gritty, gripping
