Shif is just an ordinary schoolboy who loves chess and playing with his best friend. But, one day, he is forced to leave home to avoid conscription into the army. He embarks on an epic journey, in which he encounters dangers and cruelties - and great acts of human kindness - as he bravely makes his way to a future he can only imagine.©2018 Ele Fountain (P)2018 W.F. This book was quite packed with adventure and emotion in such a short time; reflecting sad realities of people who live very different lives to those of us 'on the other side'.

As a European citizen, particularly in the Mediterranean, we are bombarded with news about refugee crises and shocking news about our governments' diplomatic arguments about which country should save these HUMAN lives, whilst leaving them out at sea - with terrible consequences. This book encapsulates everything that may happen until the moment we learn about them on the news, giving us an ever so slightly better understanding of the emotion and hardships of their experiences. I feel that this book should be encouraged/taught in all European schools especially in the Mediterranean, to instill humanitarian values in the young members of our societies.

A book that should be encouraged in every European school.

What a story. Well written. Had tears streaming down my face at the end.

Gripping, inspiring, heroic, heartbreaking!
