A bloodthirsty lake monster menaces a small town in the Ozarks....

When the men find him, the boy’s legs look like they were run through a wood-chipper. He’s bleeding heavily and near death, but he still has strength to tell them of the monster that attacked him: a dark, massive creature that emerged from the bottom of the lake. The child dies before he can say more.

c When another body is found chewed to pieces, the Sheriff begins to wonder what evil lies at the bottom of Big Water Lake.

I enjoyed listening to the story enough to finish it, but I wouldn't listen again and I am glad it was a freebie. I found it quite sexist and very stereotypical of the roles of men and women.
The women added nothing much to the story so I don't see why the point of them even was - mind you, all were physically described in detail, something the men weren't given the same attention.
I was surprised to see it was written in 2013 as it seemed very dated which is a shame because it could have been far better had it been a little more progressive.

Good enough for a free listen

Another pleasant surprise from Audible free Plus catalogue. Part of the story was terribly predictable, but the main part wasn't, so that was great because I kept listening to find out what was happening. I liked how we got to see more mundaine, everyday perspective of (supernatural?) horror events. Ambiguous ending was also a great choice. Nice quick listen.

Not bad

Surprisingly good, well written with interesting characters. Not your usual creature feature, but possibly all the better for it

Really good

Adequate 70s mystery novel with interesting cast of characters let down by weak ending. Good reader.

Adequate Mystery

Loved the way it left you wondering as to what the creature was. Stood to reason the husband had killed wife but it was great when the weapon was used.
