Summary

Returning home from a trip to Paris, Boston medical examiner Maura Isles confronts a nightmarish scene. Police cruisers line her street and slumped in a car at the end of Maura's driveway is a dead woman, her head bloodied by a gunshot wound. Cops and neighbors gape at her as she approaches. Only when Maura looks at the victim does she understand why everyone is so shocked by her arrival. The dead woman looks exactly like Maura. Within a week, the DNA lab delivers a stunning verdict: the dead woman is Maura's twin. A twin she never knew she had. Detective Jane Rizzoli, now eight months pregnant, tackles the case as chief investigator. But for Maura, this murder is far more personal and frightening.

Pacy but a bit over the top

I’ve read/listened to quite a few of the author’s books featuring pathologist Maura Isles and detective Jane Rizzoli. They’re all pacy stories that keep one interested and are worth listening to, though I wish that detective fiction writers wouldn’t have the main characters being attacked in so many of their books, including this one. if one likes this genre you accept the crimes are contrived and often preposterous but I felt this book was a bit over the top particularly the ending.

The book doesn’t dwell too much on the grisly details of the crimes unlike some authors who verge on the voyeuristic, but she does describe post mortems which some may find distasteful.

I chose this book partly because it is narrated with panache by Lorelei King: one of the best in the business.

excellent!

I had been looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint. Fast moving and frightening at timestamp it almost feels like you are there!!!The twist in the last few chapters is great and makes the book fantastic. If you enjoy Rizzoli and Isles on TV then you will more than enjoy this book!! I am now going to read the next in the series,!!!

Highly recommended for crime, murder-mystery & Rizzoli & Isles lovers!

I love this book - an excellent instalment in the Rizzoli & Izles series - and have listened so many times. I won't go into story details (I hate spoilers!) but we find out a LOT about Maura's birth family in the course of the book, not much of it good. And a highly pregnant Jane Rizzoli throws herself into solving the multiple murders uncovered in the course of her investigations.
I highly recommend this book for all R&I fans (who won't recognise it from the tv show), as well as other crime and murder-mystery lovers. And if you like this story, you'll like the whole series!

Very personal

I thoroughly enjoyed this detective mystery, having watched a few episodes of the TV series. Dr Isles is launched into a scary journey of discovery into her birth parent’s’ identities and she and Rizzoli (they are more or less at the beginning of their friendship)become embroiled I’m catching serial killers. There are interesting twists and I think I may try another book in the series!

Good Story.

I personally was disappointed with the 'voice/accent' used for the Jane Rizzoli character. A small thing, but it grated on me. Great story and narration otherwise.

First but definitely not last.

I am a massive fan of the TV show, this is the first Rizzoli and Isles book I have experienced but will not be the last. I will start off with the performance.. I could listen Lorelei King for days!!!! Great performance, great rhythm and what a voice! The only aspect I didn't like was unfortunately the voice she created for Rizzoli. I know she had to create a voice distinctive from herself as the Narrator and Isles, but the voice was a slightly child-like voice and it fought against the strength and confidence of her character. Despite the book starting with a bang with it's concept it felt slow to truly get going. But the book picked up pace all the way to the end, by the time I realised I was hooked there was no going back. I love the writing, the separate parts of the story feel sperate until they weave together like silk near the end. So much storytelling is done by the characters dialogue and not by the narrator and I have a passion for strong dialogue. I would actually also have loved a couple of extra hours worth of material a little bit of 'shoe leather' in between set pieces. Sometimes they can jump between their set pieces quite abruptly. But I understand for a lot of people the brisk pace will suit a lot of people too.

Brilliant.

Tess Gerritsen has been one of my favourite authors for many years and rereading this gritty, suspense filled thriller reminds why I cannot get enough of her writing. The narration was clear and consistent with great voice acting.

Body Double.

Lorolei King has the most perfect voice. The plot was ok but it relied on one big red herring.
