A missing detective. A trail of blood. A predator hidden among us.

From British horror author Remy Porter comes the first novel in the Jonas Hale series—a dark blend of supernatural horror, mystery, and dark urban fantasy.

"Volatility, gore, twists, and ghoulishly pleasurable."—Lori Bowland, LivingDeadMedia.com

Jonas Hale hasn’t been home in seven years.

Living in a remote French sanatorium, he has spent most of that time trying not to think about the fire that destroyed his family. Then his grandfather disappears.

Drawn back to England by Arthur Hale’s disappearance, Jonas arrives in Blackpool expecting a missing-person investigation. Instead, he finds a trail of unexplained deaths, vanished witnesses, and unsettling questions surrounding his grandfather’s last case.

The deeper he digs, the stranger the town becomes. Old photographs raise impossible questions. Forgotten histories seem determined to stay hidden.

And increasingly, Jonas feels as though something is watching his every move.

As Jonas follows the trail left behind by his grandfather, he discovers that beneath Blackpool’s bright lights and faded attractions lies a darkness far older than anyone suspects.

But Jonas is carrying darkness of his own.

And in the shadows, something is ready to surface.

Of all the places I never expected to become the backdrop for a multilayered vampire horror, Blackpool would have been pretty far down the list! But Remy Porter made Blackpool creepy as hell in a very real, run-down kind of way, which I absolutely loved. The descriptions of the settings throughout made this fantastical horror feel grounded and believable in the best possible way!

So, let’s get into it a little (no spoilers, I promise!). The characters are multilayered but relatable and, although I won’t spoil anything for you, there are plenty of interesting, moderately concerning and downright dark elements to our main character, Jonas Hale.

When Jonas learns that his grandad has disappeared, he makes the trip from France (you’ll find out why he’s there, too!) to Blackpool in the hope of discovering what happened to his grandad. What follows is a barrage of interlinking stories, dangerous enemies, weird and wonderful characters, and gritty fights along the way.

I felt the pacing was steady throughout, and at no point did the story feel slow or boring. From the very beginning, it hooked my attention enough that I flew through it in just a couple of days via audiobook. Honestly, it was a real wild ride of a story!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It delivers proper British horror and suspense, with a gritty atmosphere that pulls you right in, and I’m absolutely here for it!

Vampires, demons and thralls…oh my!
