Summary

Cold-blooded kidnappers. Long-lost magic. When things get serious, she goes full Sherlock.

Ashira Cohen takes pride in being the only female private investigator in Vancouver. With her skills, her missing persons case should be a piece of cake.

She wasn't counting on getting bashed in the skull, revealing a hidden tattoo and supernatural powers she shouldn't possess.

Or the bitter icing on top: a spree of abductions and terrifying ghostly creatures on a deadly bender.

And don't even get her started on the golems.

Reluctantly partnered with her long-time nemesis Levi, the infuriating leader of the magic community, Ash resolves to keep her focus on the clue trail and off their sexual tension because WTF is up with that?

But with a mastermind organization pulling strings from the shadows and Levi's arrogance driving her to pick out his body bag, can Ash rescue the captives and uncover the truth or will the next blood spilled be her own?

Blood & Ash is the epic first novel in The Jezebel Files. If you like headstrong heroines, complex mysteries, and a dash of red-hot romance, you'll love Deborah Wilde's laugh out loud tale.

Thank Goodness for a New Wilde Series!

I really enjoyed the Unlikeable Demon Hunter series and was rather bereft when it ended. I tried the Leone novel, but really stuggled with the narration style. Fortunately Deborah Wilde and Hollie Jackson are back on form with this offering. A new series and a new supernatural world to explore. Another feisty heroine who feels distinct from Nava but still has a healthy dose of humour and irreverence.

Can't wait for the next book!

Having read and loved the Unlikable Demon Hunter series, I had high expectations from this book, going in. I'm happy to say I was not disappointed in the least!

Ash is snarky and kickass without the need to show off her snark and kickassness (kickassery?) at every turn, the plot is unique and engaging, the characters ring true despite the magic element, and the sexy scenes are steamy without becoming the focus of the book.

Hollie Jackson does a great job giving life to the story. She and Deborah Wilde's heroines seem to be a match made in audio-book lovers' heaven.

I hope the next book is out soon. I'm hooked and need more!

Great Start

Fantastic start if you like urban crime fantasy.

This is about a female PI in an alternate world where magic is available and caused originally by ten men who try to cheat and carry out a Jewish ritual but it goes awry and magic is released.
The female lead thinks she’s mundane but due to an accident a ward on her head is damaged and she finds out she has a type of magic thought to not exist.

Disappointing

I just don’t get what this book/story/series is trying to be. The storyline is rushed and makes no real sense. The author skips from one plot reveal to another never fleshing out any of them so your still wondering what the hell the last one is about when’s into the next one. I’m all for fast paced but this just didn’t work

Filler book

I chose this book because I am waiting for the new Dresden book (Jim Butcher) and the new Guild Codex (Annette Marie) book to drop. it was a nice quick book and satisfied my detective urban fantasy craving. Narration was good, no page shuffling or background noise. Story could be smoother....but it is the first book of the series....so it will most likely improve.

Same Story Different Names

The main character, Ash, is constantly telling us what her personality is like. It works better when the reader is able to make those determinations based on the character's behavior. An example is when Ash describes herself as being closed off because she has issues with abandonment. And then she keeps reminding us.

The world building is minimal but I think for the mood of the book it doesn't hinder anything. As the story continues and things get more complicated, they'll need to be some more details added.

To be honest, I started this review at the beginning of the week and hot distracted... its Wednesday now and I cant even remember what this book was about 😬 soooo, I'll listen to it again and get back to you.

Ok, I listened to the first two chapters and it all came back to me.

I found this series much better than the Unlikeable Demon Slayer by this author, but the plots are very very similar. In both books the lead female randomly learns of her magic. The lead guy is a famous magic user. The two leads don't get along but secretly love each other. The only difference in the books are the type of jobs the characters have. Like I said, very similar.

Explicit mind candy

The story is entertaining as long as the listener realizes this is pure mind candy. Be aware that it is very explicit regarding language and sex; listener must be willing to accept constant F-bombs and sex descriptions.

Predictable

Predictable and trite. Don’t bother. No character development. Shallow characters. Heroine is a mundane detective. She gets an injury during a fight and a tattoo hidden under her hair is marred, this releasing magic she never knew she had. Not just any magic, but blood magic. She knows it’s blood magic even though no one has ever heard of blood magic because ? Who knows? Suddenly she can expertly wield her magic, creating weapons and armor made of blood. Oh, and if ripping off that idea of Ilona Andrews’ wasn’t bad enough, she also takes on golems. Somehow she Intuits that if she erases the e from the word emet written onto the golems’ forehead, that will kill the golem. (Sound familiar readers of Ilona Andrews?) Bland, predictable, and done a million times over by better writers. Don’t waste your money.

LOVED!

The story was awesome. It had moments of seriousness but buffered with humor. I didn't want to stop listening to the story because I wanted to know what was going to happen.

Hollie Jackson did an amazing job narrating the story. She did the different voices well and even at the fast pace I listen to books didn't sound weird.

Will definitely pick up more by this author and narrator.

Sensational & Snarky

I loved theis first in series. The female lead is sensationally snarky & flawed but strong. The way magic is portrayed in this world is quite original. The narrator was fantastic at bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more from this author and in this series

Entertaining & enjoyable

Blood & Ash: A Snarky Urban Fantasy Detective Series: The Jezebel Files, Book One, my first read from author Deborah Wilde, surprising since I own 4 other books by her, judging by this book I should have read her earlier. Entertaining, fun read. Hollie Jackson's narration made the 8-hour 45-minute tale pass quickly and adds to the book's enjoyment. I'll be reading more from this author. I look forward to Death & Desire: The Jezebel Files, Book Two. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Awesome escape!

Going through some rough stuff and needed to find a book to help me escape. Stumbled upon this book and decided to give it a try. It is now one of my new favorites! Snarky, bad-ass female lead, and appropriately yummy lead male. Some parts were kinda obvious, but I still love this book!

Great start!

Excellent start to a new series! Relatable characters and a storyline to hold your attention. Our MC has snarky wit to match her impressive will to find the truth. An original, action packed mystery with just the right amount of heat. The narrator did a fantastic job- they can truly make or break a story. I’m definitely looking forward to the next in this series.
