Summary

Aberdeen's growing Polish community is under attack from a serial offender who leaves mutilated victims to be discovered on building sites - eyes gouged out and the sockets burned.

Detective Sergeant Logan McRae is assigned to the investigation, codenamed Operation Oedipus, but with the victims too scared to talk, it's going nowhere fast.

When the next victim turns out to be not a newly arrived Eastern European, but Simon McLeod, owner of the Turf n' Track bookies, Logan suddenly finds himself caught up in a world of drug wars, prostitution rings and gun-running courtesy of Aberdeen's oldest and most vicious crime lord.

Another good read made better by being unabridged

I'm still only half way through this latest DS McRae outing but so far it's much better than the others. Why? Because we finally get an unabridged version of one of the books. I've always felt that the other books have been missing something due to being shortened, but here we get the full story as intended (and brilliantly read) by the author. So come on Audible, do us all a favour and obtain the unabridged versions of his other works. They are available, although very expensive, on other media.

Stuart MacBride's DS McRae, although previously described as 'no Rebus' is an excellently drawn character and these books make a cracking listen on a long journey. They really help pass the time. If you like Modern Detective stories then you can't go wrong with this one. A word of warning however - I would advise listening to these novels on order, as there is a lot of character backstory that carries over across the series.

Stick to your day job

I’ve really enjoyed the first two books of this series and hoped for more of the same. Unfortunately this book is read by the author and whilst he is a brilliant writer he cannot narrate at all. Book was rendered unlistenable let alone enjoyable. All I thought when I finished the book was I hope he’s not reading the next one or I’m looking for a new author.

Narration far too fast!

I love these books and have really got into Steve Worsley's narration. Unfortunately this audio is narrated by the author and it is awful! Too fast to follow easily or enjoy and his voices are dreadful. In fact I've given up and jumped forward 2 books so I can get back to decent narration again. Stuart MacBride is a fabulous writer, so he should let a fabulous narrator do justice to his work.

Entertainment at high speed!

A brilliant story from Mr MacBride, as always, but goodness did he rush through it. I thought I'd set my player on double speed. His almost breathless narration very nearly spoiled the experience for me. Very nearly, but not quite. His characterisations were wonderful, Logan as always getting the sharp end of the stick, Steele at her acidic best, and I just wanted to punch Finney in the mouth. The secondary story had me wincing with embarrassment on Logan's behalf and Rennie's 'Sperminator' had me not touching handrails for weeks afterwards. Well done, Stuart. Another winner, but please, slow down next time, eh? My ears can't listen as fast as you read :-D

Brilliant Brilliant Oh did i say brilliant

Oh why does Stuart not read more of his own books. He is beyond brilliant. The story is hideous and will turn your stomach then have you belly laughing. Oh please i can't hear this it is so horrible, then how has he made this so funny.

I can't actually capture how much I admire the writing. so well researched and so puerile at the same time. Fantastically hate-able characters.

If you like hard hitting cop drama there is no better.

Stuart PLEASE narrate more of your books. You really make a good story.... Brilliant

Not for the squeamish

Probably the best yet of the Logan McRae books and read brilliantly by the author. The story is gory, the humour is broad but effective and DI Steel shows her more pathetic side but only on occasion!

A truly "cannot turn off Audiobook"

Stuart Macbride has once again managed to create a "talking picture" that allows the listener to use their head as their own private cinema, a fabulous tale well written.

Bring back Steve Worsley as the Narrator

Found, just a bit to much shouting from the main characters, which becomes annoying after a while. Steve Worsley makes it easier on the ear. Otherwise the story is great.

COULDN'T ENDURE THE SHOUTING AND POOR NARRATION

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who doesn't get irritated at the verbal abuse and shouting. Someone who can believe in Inspector Steel without thinking "Is this meant to sound like a woman".

What was most disappointing about Stuart MacBride’s story?

Having listened to Cold Granite, narrated by Steve Worsley I thought this detective series was for me. Not wanting to listen to abridged versions I downloaded Blind Eye, narrated by Stuart McBride and found his reading so over the top I have stopped listening to the remainder. I also downloaded Shatter the Bones, narrated by Steve Worsley which I, hopefully, will enjoy. I have over 850 stories downloaded from Audible ... this rendition is one of the worst!

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Stuart MacBride?

I enjoyed Cold Granite narrated by Steve Worsley who is far more in tune and sympathetic with the plot line and characters. He is believable ... the author's narration was awful.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Blind Eye?

Most of them were difficult to engage with because of my irritation with the narrator.

Any additional comments?

What a difference good narration makes to what could have been an entertaining and enjoyable series!

A gripping listen

I sometimes use talking books on my IPOD to help me get to sleep! This was completely impossible with Blind Eye - it completely held my attention, whether through some of the more graphic scenes or through the hilarious character of DI Steel. I love the way Stuart McBride narrates his work - he is very good at illustrating his books in an entirely natural and authentic-sounding way. It's also great to have a main protagonist, in DS Logan McCrae, who isn't the archetypal 'failure as a father, alcoholic loser' of a detective and who is actually likeable! This is the second unabridged Logan McCrae novel I have listened to from Audible and I can't wait for the next!
