About this listen

Blackstone and the Rendezvous with Death is an expertly plotted Victorian mystery that will keep listeners guessing to the last minute.

The body of a young man fished out of the Thames is of little interest to Londoners caught up in the excitement of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Yet to Inspector Sam Blackstone, the case is as puzzling as any he has ever come across.

Why should a corpse dressed in the rags of a commoner have the face of a gentleman? And if this man does belong to noble stock, why has no one come forward to claim the body? As his investigation proceeds, Blackstone finds himself entering the world of the aristocracy.

Death seems to stalk him, and as each new clue leads to nothing more than a new murder, Blackstone comes to realise that he is caught up in what may turn out to be the most horrendous crime of the century.

An OK story. The bodies start to pile up which is always a concern when everyone the police talk to gets killed. The detective also did very little detecting.

Intriguing story, interesting characters and great narration. I've read all this series in print so delighted now available in audio. Highly recommend.

Proper story telling!

There’s a lot to like about this book. It moves at a fast pace, it gives a real insight into the lives of the poor and the entitled within Victorian society. It has Russian spies and overworked detectives. The plot is generally good with a twist at the end which I had worked out but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment. Plus it’s a freebie! Give it a try ….

Better than I thought it would be!

A thoroughly good book. If you enjoy Victorian dramas you will love this one and the reader Andrew Cullum was absolutely excellent.

A Ripping Yarn

Little or no historical research in this otherwise well narrated story. The storyline was fairly good but please do some research before writing an historical novel. Women did not use face powder standing in the street in 1897, nor did they even enter public houses (bars), never mind go up to the bar to buy drinks. Nor did they smoke cigarettes. Perhaps the author did her research by watching Bridgerton.

Good plot. Shame about the research.
