Summary

Lethal, sexy, and always ready to protect her friends, Gin Blanco (a.k.a. the Spider) takes on the mysterious M.M. Monroe in book 12 of the New York Times and USA TODAY best-selling Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill - and my murder to plan. With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit. The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident - and that each unfortunate "coincidence" is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bull’s-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

Another adrenaline filled adventure for Gin Blanco

Jennifer Estep has produced yet another terrific Gin Blanco story. Love the way Gin's enemies elemental powers keep getting wierder and the deaths more gruesome. Lauren Fortgang continues to be the perfect narrator for this series.

Fun!

First Thoughts when Finished: Black Widow by Jennifer Estep was another strong entry in Elemental Assassins series. The characters are still as bad*ss as ever. Also, I really dug the different way that this all "played" out in the end. MM was not my favorite villain in the series but I think she maybe was the craftiest. I was just happy that it appears Bria is finally ok with her sister (let's hope cause if not I am taking Finn back).

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by: Lauren Fortgang /Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins

Once a series goes into automatic listen (which this is for me) I sound a bit like a broken record. However, let me state this again: Lauren nails Gin and Gang with the sass, brass, and southern of a narrator who just might really be an elemental assassin! She is that convincing :) So just listen to it already!

Super surprise ending

What made the experience of listening to Black Widow the most enjoyable?

It was very different from the other stories, the line was very active and fast. Non-stop action from start to finish.

What about Lauren Fortgang’s performance did you like?

Lauren Fortgang is one of my favorite narrators, she's fantastic with different voices even men. She's also great with emotions. I've listened to her narrations in other books by other authors.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Several, especially the end which is a real twist. (fans will love it)

Any additional comments?

I've listened to every book in the series and only one (book 6) I didn't enjoy. because of Detective Donovan Caine, who was so pompous it made the story annoying. (glad he's not in any of the stories anymore)

Good Addition to the Series

Where does Black Widow rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have loved this series ever since my wife introduced me to paranormal romance.
The whole series is well written and well read. 9 out of 10 and I will revisit the
whole series several times again.

What about Lauren Fortgang’s performance did you like?

Her characterizations and Southern Accent make BLACK WIDOW and the whole
Elemental Assassin series a Joy to Listen to.

entertaining

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, it has a great bit of humor and the narrator is easy to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

sloppy, sloppy, sloppy... cracked me up every time she said it. liked relationship with her "brother"...

What does Lauren Fortgang bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

probably the bit of twang in her voice, but it fits.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

moved...? the books are fun, not deep.

like mother, like daughter

In this twelfth installment of Elemental Assassin, we find our heroine Gin Blanco coming up against the daughter of her now dead nemesis Mab Monroe. M. M. Monroe decides to get back at Gin by making things a little rough for her friends and family. But we all know the last thing you want to do is mess with Gin's family. Plenty of thrills and action in this one. To save her friends and family The Spider must bring her best game to the battle.

Good listen 👂

What would have made Black Widow better?
This is the 12th book in this series and I love the writing, Jennifer Estep is a great writer with characters and descriptions but it's the 12th book in the series and it's the same book from the beginning with slight changes in plot.

Has Black Widow turned you off from other books in this genre?
Well, let me put it to you this way: when I start a series, it's to find out what happens next and usually, I m excited for the next book. This book took me a year to download because the last few have been uneventful. I'm hardly chomping at the bit for the next book. So I m eager to listen to other series before I start the next book. I'll save the next one when there's nothing on my list to read first.

What three words best describe Lauren Fortgang’s performance?
Perfect, engrossing and destined!

What character would you cut from Black Widow?
The cop sister is starting to annoy me. She can go, I won't mind.

Any additional comments?
It's time to get started on an outline of where this series is headed. It can't keep up with the same song and dance in each book, the author will lose her audience.

A testament of will!

Gin is, by far and away, the most powerful elemental ever. She's also like a cat, with 9 lives. She can survive even a blaze to destroy the Pork Pit. How she manages to defeat even death is unbelievable. This is a true testament to her abilities. Yet, the cycle continues in the blood feud between the Snow's and the Monroe's.
