Summary

Perfect for fans of Stephen King's IT, a group of friends return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they first stumbled on as teenagers in this mesmerizing odyssey of terror.

An atmospheric, haunting thriller, full of memorable characters and sublime terror, from the author of Come with Me

For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together.

Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood. In the light of new danger, they must confront their past by facing their futures, and hunting down a man who may very well be a monster.

Creep-o-meter on red alert

To say I loved this is an understatement. This is the 3rd book I've read / listened to by R Malfi. December Park and Come with me, this is my favourite so far. He has an amazing ability to create characters that you really care about as children and the adults they become.
This book was way up on the creep-o-meter of horror but low on the gore.
The narration was perfect, engaging and really bought the whole story to life.
I cannot recommend more highly. If you love horror please read this..

Excellent coming of age horror.

I’m a sucker for coming of age tales and this is one of the best I’ve ever read. I loved December Park by the same author but this is even better. Brilliantly narrated too.

Highly recommended.

Best one so far

Heavily inspired by King but in a way that feels more like an homage to SK’s work and not just imitation. Narration was good. I really enjoyed this listen.

Just brilliant

I don’t give 5* lightly and as an avid audible listener have a lot to compare it to. So well narrated and a story that is detailed, dark and absorbing. I didn’t want it to end

Fantastic! I loved it!

I absolutely loved this novel. It kept me intrigued right up to the end. The characters were likable and I enjoyed being with them on their journey to find the Magician. The themes of destiny/nature Vs nurture and alcoholism were deeply moving, well explored and interesting.
I liked the narrator too. His voice for the magician was perfect.

Well paced horror story

This was a well paced story that left you wanting more at the end of every chapter. I love how the sinister story arc gradually reveals itself and I loved the characters. Plenty of chilling and nasty moments but great depth and imaginative story too.

A mish mash of other books

I suppose if you're very young and haven't read much Stephen King or other authors in this genre, you may find the story entertaining. If like me you are over 50 and well read, you may find this to be a story written by someone who has frankly just pinched ideas from other books and cobbled them together to produce this. I think it's awful that authors can't use their own imaginations instead of doing this and I feel a credit was wasted as well as my time. This story is clearly not one from the author's imagination it's a lazy remake of better authors work. I would have given the narrator 3 but the way scores are averaged out giving an incorrect overall score, made me stick to 2, so people aren't fooled into thinking this is a better book than it is.
