What would you do to protect a loved one? Would you kill? Widower Ian Moore will do almost anything to protect his daughter from a threat that comes straight out of our darkest fairytales.

If he has his way he'll prove that Ashley was the absolutely worst target they could have picked.

In fact, you might want to take notes, 'cause your family may be next.

Loved this series

Loved this series. Its even better how the narrator gives a voice to each character and you really feel all emotions from his voices, joy, sadness, humor, this has lead me to by the rest of this series and lots more books the narrator does.

hmmmm

I enjoyed the fairly standard story line and can see how it slightly fits into the series (up to this point) but it did seem to be slightly disjointed from the main story (unless tied in later, but still being fairly vampire centric)

Escapism at its best

The story hits the spots for me and the narrator is icing on the cake. Just wish there was an endless supply of John Conroe books.

WOW--This was such a good book 5/5

John Conroe,
I don't normally expect a lot out of a 4.5 book--It is usually just an add on--or an off part of a story.

BOY WAS I PROVEN WRONG!

YOU HAD ME HOOKED from beginning to end. I literally couldn't put the book down. I was totally devoted to the characters and absorbed in the tale--I needed to know what was going to happen next-- I will not give away any spoilers (I will not be that mean).
THIS ONE IS A MUST READ!!!!! 5/5

James Patrick Cronin--YOU are the voice of The Demon Accords for me. Great performance and portrayal of the characters John has created. Applause

Delightful!

This new connected storyline in the Demon Universe confirms Conroe as a new auto-buy author for me. I was delighted with the storyline, which was a little gory and scary but not as high testosterone as the prior 9 Demon Universe stories. Kudos and I hope the author keeps the differentiation between the She (elves) world storyline with Ashley and her father and Chris Gordon's vampire-laced human world storyline.

I started this book yesterday afternoon and couldn't sleep until I finished it at 5 am. The experience was like when I first read Iron Kissed by Briggs, Shards of Honor by Bujold, or (finally) listened to On Basilisk Station by Weber. These are some of my auto-buys, which I notice by my belly deep need to get the next book in the series ASAP.

I picked up all 9 of the prior Demon Accords books just this year so I've gorged on Conroe's urban fantasy recently. What stood out in Black Frost that delighted this review out of me is Conroe's ability to create a more female-oriented storyline albeit from the father's point of view. The first 9 stories have a definite male author feeling ala Jim Butcher's Dresden Files or Larry Correia's Monster International but this new storyline puts me in mind of Anne Rice' Meredith Gentry She world stories without the obsessive sex..I would say more PG but for the violence IMO at a PG level but I don't have a child. I hope the author can sustain this difference in the following books. I note that Nutall has been able to create such different stories with his separate Space Opera as opposed to his School of Magic storylines.

I hope this review makes sense. Off to get the Kindle edition of Winterfall. I can't wait 6 weeks for audible!

Sweet but Too Short

I think John just threw this out before it should have been; the main characters where fully developed but the secondaries were wholly malnourished, as was the climax. Seemed minor. Good concept, but I felt robbed overall.

Very expensive considering performance time and price

Very expensive, considering performance time and price. I like the book. Just as I have enjoyed the rest of the series.

Gun porn extreme

Conroe's Demon Accords series has always had a healthy dose of what I call "gun porn", but this books seems a little more over the top than previous. Maybe that's because the main character lacks supernatural powers. In any case I still found it enjoyable.

Conroe lets his inner bro-cheese loose.

While I love this series as a whole, John Conroe sometimes has a tendency to get lazy with his plot devices and hokey with his characters. This story, while filling in a big hole in the plot of the main series and being fairly exciting, has a double dose of both.

Conroe has a habit of overdoing his “tough-guy” descriptions and lapsing into a caricatured, Bro-down. It’s like he’s channeling a Chuck Norris joke.

Also, there are parts of this story where the characters’ decisions make little to no sense and Conroe just throws out a sentence of laughable justification or just ignores the faulty logic altogether.

All that said, this mini-book moves fast, and while the narrator doesn’t do anything to minimize the cheesiness of the MC’s faux-badass bravado I still found myself engrossed in the story enough to be annoyed when the flaws jarred me out of the flow.

Most importantly, I really don’t think this book is necessary to the series and if you skip it you’ll have no trouble following the over-all plot. So if you don’t feel like spending a whole credit on a 6-hour story there’s no real need to do so. However, if you’re a die-hard Conroe/Demon Accords fan and have no idea what I was talking about in the beginning of this review then you should definitely spend the credit.

Good book...bit too short!

Really enjoyable work. Well written. It went by in about six hours as it was just too short.
