About this listen

From the author of the Amazon top 20 best seller The Trespass....

DCI Brendan Moran, world-weary veteran of 1970s Ireland, is recuperating from a near-fatal car crash when a murder is reported at Charnford Abbey.

The abbot and his monks are strangely uncooperative, but when a visitor from the Vatican arrives and an ancient relic goes missing, the truth behind Charnford's pact of silence threatens to expose not only the abbey's haunted secrets, but also the spirits of Moran's own troubled past....

Black December is an atmospheric crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the stunning climax....

The first Moran book settles the character well, with his personal issues and past romances as well as an upbringing that ties in with the case he is handed.
The discovery of a dead body in a catholic boarding school brings back memories of his own childhood, which helps to set the scene for the reader. The plot involves twists and turns, both related to the crime and his own personal life and career. Political shenanigans and corruption within the police are well related and don’t feel overdone.
A solid entry and the character will have be coming back for the second book.
My main gripe would be how similar a lot of the surnames are, making it a little harder to differentiate in my head on audio.

A decent crime tale of corruption

Far to many characters story line disjointed and the ending was rushed. But I will give book 2 a try

Confusing

This author is new to me but after devouring this audiobook in a single sitting I'll be looking out for more. The details and pacing of the story are spot on and really draw the listener into the surroundings and the action. The narration also helps to keep things flowing and it's great to listen to.

Highly recommended. I can't wait to listen to the next on the series.
